‘We got the intel yesterday afternoon,’ Charles said, ‘I’m afraid Logan took it upon himself to act before we had a chance to formulate a proper plan.’
That’s what you were told when you turned up for work to find Logan gone. That had been several days ago and the rest of the team had also now gone, both to carry out the mission and to find Logan, you hoped. You kept up the pretence of trying to teach but it was hard to keep your mind on work, especially knowing that Logan had been so reckless. Also, with a large portion of the teaching staff still being absent, there was only so much that you and those remaining could do. It gave you a stark reminder of the realities of what the school and the work Charles and the X Men were actually doing.
You tried to distract yourself by concentrating on outstanding admin and lesson planning, but none of that helped to stop the ache you felt from missing, and worrying about, Logan.
Normally when you arrived at the school you’d walk into your office and find a mug of coffee already on your desk waiting for you. Sometimes accompanied by the person who made it, often just a note on his surprisingly neat hand. That morning, nothing. No coffee, no note, no Logan. It was then that Charles had sent word he wished to speak to you.
‘Why would he do that?’ you asked.
‘I think you have been here long enough now to know that Logan has his own way of doing things. Unfortunately, this time he has overstepped.’
‘Is he in trouble?’ you asked, the question felt infantilising.
‘In so much as I can punish Logan for what amounts to insubordination, then yes he will be in trouble,’ Charles said, ‘but I think we both know that in reality that will mean very little to him.’
You sat in front of Charles’ desk and chewed on your lip. You had things you wanted to say but weren’t sure how to say them. As it was, you didn’t need to.
‘I’m sure he will be back here and back with you soon,’ Charles said, smiling.
‘As discreet as you both may think you are being, I’m afraid things have not gone unnoticed.’
You looked at him then looked away, blushing. Which things, you were afraid to ask.
‘Amongst other things, you were overheard talking,’ Charles continued, ‘by Kitty and Jubilee one evening. I’m afraid the gossip, which they claimed they tried to contain, has spread like wildfire.’
‘Oh,’ you said, wondering how you were going to face everyone. Then you figured that at the moment, everyone had other things on their minds and it was a little self-centred to assume they would be spending too much time thinking about you and Logan. You stood up, ‘Thank you, Professor. Will...will you please keep me up to date on anything you find out about Logan? If you’re able to of course.’
He nodded and said he would. You left and headed to your office, then to your class to attempt to teach.
As a few days turned into a week the only communication was between Charles and Scott, and no information about Logan was forthcoming. You started to feel even more antsy. You were sat in the common room, pretending to read, when Rogue spotted you as she walked by. She came in and sat next to you.
‘You alright?’ she asked.
‘Hmmm?’ You’d not realised you’d been so zoned out and hadn’t noticed her, ‘yes I’m fine.’
‘That why you’re picking the hell out of your nails?’
You looked down at where she nodded and realised how badly you’d been picking at the skin around your nail beds, now looking sore and bloody.
‘Come on,’ Rogue said softly, ‘let’s go put a band aid on those.’
You followed her to the kitchen where there was a basic first aid kit. You sat at the table while she gently wrapped band aids around your fingers. As she put the kit away she turned back to you.
‘He’ll be okay,’ she said.
She smiled and sat down next to you.
‘So, you don’t have to worry about him.’
‘I’m not worried about him,’ you said with a small unconvincing laugh, ‘why would I be?’
Rogue looked at you for a moment before reaching out a gloved hand and taking hold of yours. She looked at you and you couldn’t hold it in any longer.
‘I just miss him so much,’ you said quietly, desperately trying not to cry.
She moved her chair closer to you and gave you a hug.
‘Oh sugar,’ she soothed, ‘really got under your skin, hasn’t he?’
You nodded against her shoulder.
‘We all know, by the way,’ she said quietly, and you could hear her smile. You let out a little laugh.
‘I know you do,’ you sighed, ‘Charles told me about us being overheard.’
‘It would have come out sooner or later. You were being discreet. Logan, not so much.’
‘Yeah, it didn’t take me long to discover that subtlety isn’t exactly his strong suit,’ you said, ‘or...following rules, or not being a stubborn, pig-headed idiot.’
You found yourself telling her about how you and Logan met – which made her feel vindicated and was absolutely something she would rub in Kitty and Jubilee’s faces – how you found yourself falling in love with him.
‘That wasn’t the plan,’ you sniffed, ‘I didn’t think it would be a good idea but I couldn’t help it.’
‘I’m happy for you,’ Rogue said, and looking at her you could see that she sincerely was, ‘Logan’s a complicated man, but he’s a good man.’
You let out a breath, wondering how much else you should say. As far as you knew, the knowledge of how Logan changed the future was still only known by him, Charles and you. Your mind went back to the night you were apparently overheard. Logan had mentioned that. Was that common knowledge now as well? One thing at a time, you thought.
‘Has he done this before?’ you asked, changing the subject a little, ‘gone off on his own without the team like this.’
‘More times than I’d care to remember. I mean you’ve seen the way he is with Scott, doesn’t have one lick of respect for his authority,’ she said, ‘even if he is the leader of the team, Logan doesn’t seem to care much.’
‘Does he want to lead the team instead?’ you asked.
‘Logan? Hell no. I don’t think he wants to be on a team at all!’
‘He respects Charles though?’
‘He does. Still doesn’t mean he’s going to do as he’s told.’
You let out a small laugh.
‘I am worried about him,’ you admitted, ‘a lot.’
‘Of course you are,’ Rogue smiled softly and hugged you again.
You were just walking in the front door one morning when Rogue came running down the hallway towards you, grabbing your hand.
‘They’re back! Come on!’ she said, ‘we need to get some blankets and take them to the jet. They’ve brought back a whole bunch of kids.’
You both ran to the hanger, stopping to collect what was needed. You saw the Blackbird now back in its spot. Ororo and Jean were leading a small group of raggedly dressed children down the steps, gratefully taking the blankets to wrap them up in, then ushering them through to the med bay. You and Rogue watched them go past.
‘Poor babies,’ Rogue said.
You nodded but your eyes were fixed on the jet. Hank emerged, tapping away on a tablet, then a few more team members, then you saw him. Logan, striding down the steps of the jet, looking the worse for wear, clothes ripped and dirty. The rest of the team were in their suits, it looked like Logan had just gone off in his usual jeans and flannel.
You were beside him and on him before he barely had a chance to put both feet on the hanger floor. You crushed your lips against his, your arms clinging to him, his hands in your hair, on your waist, everywhere all at once. He returned your kiss with vigour. You were the centre of attention, all eyes on you but you didn’t care.
‘You’re back,’ you sighed, finally parting from him.
‘So I am,’ he smiled and kissed you again.
You heard a cough beside you and parted, looking around.
‘We need to debrief with the Professor. Now,’ Scott said, sounding as angry as you’d ever heard him. Logan glared, still holding on to you. The look on Scott’s face showed that he would not take no for an answer.
‘He’ll be there,’ you said, ignoring the face Logan was pulling.
Soon you were the last two people left in the hanger.
‘I don’t want to go to some dumb debrief, want to take you to bed,’ Logan said, sighing, ‘just lie with you and forget the world for a while.’
‘I want that too,’ you said, ‘but I think you need to go and explain yourself.’
He brushed some hair back behind your ear.
‘Gotta explain myself to you too, sweetheart?’ he asked.
‘A little explanation wouldn’t go amiss,’ you said, ‘but that can wait.’
You stared at him again, your fingers rubbing over some dirt on his face.
‘Was it bad? Are all those kids mutants?’
‘Found them in a government facility. They’ve been...bred,’ Logan couldn’t hide the disgust in his voice, ‘so much for human-mutant relations.’
Your mind went back to Charles’ cocktail party. Were any of those people responsible for this? The thought made you shudder.
‘That’s terrible,’ you said, ‘but at least they’re safe now.’
‘What’s wrong?’ you asked.
‘It was all for nothing.’
‘Me, going to the past, changing the future,’ he looked at you, ‘it might have stopped that future from happening but now this one is...it’s just a different set of assholes trying to...’ he swallowed and looked down at where you were holding his hands.
‘Logan, what you did wasn’t worthless,’ you soothed.
He dropped your hands and started to head out of the hanger. You followed him.
‘I gotta change and go see Charles, go to the briefing,’ he said, ‘I’ll come and find you after?’
You nodded and let him go.
The yelling could be heard through most of the school. You’d headed to the medical bay to see if you could do anything for the kids. Jean asked if you could rustle up some food for them because God knew when they’d last eaten. You nodded and headed to the kitchen, roping in Kitty and Rogue to help you make some sandwiches.
‘Do we have any soup?’ you asked, searching through the cupboards, ‘something warm?’
Kitty came over to help you look and that’s when you all heard the raised voices begin. Raised voices, then yelling, then a few thuds.
‘What the hell was that?’ you asked.
‘If I had to guess,’ Rogue sighed, ‘Logan isn’t taking to being disciplined very well. The thud was probably him decking Scott.’
‘Wouldn’t be the first time,’ Kitty shrugged.
You ran out of the kitchen and headed towards Charles’ study. This was ridiculous, there was no need for Logan to be acting like this. As you turned the corner of the hallway, you saw Logan had Scott up against the wall, Scott’s suit twisted up in Logan’s fists. There was a darkening bruise on Scott’s jaw. You couldn’t see Charles, presumably he was still in his study. Why he wasn’t stopping them, you had no clue and there wasn’t time to ask. You didn’t bring your mutation to bear often, but this was a good opportunity. Just as Logan pulled back his fist to hit Scott again he froze, his arm refusing to move no matter how much he tried, giving Scott the chance to pull himself free.
‘Thank you,’ he said, rubbing his jaw, ‘if you care about him, you’ll get him the hell out of here. Don’t bring him back until he’s calmed down. Or grown up.’
‘I will,’ you said, looking at a still frozen Logan, currently shooting daggers at you and Scott.
‘For someone nearly two centuries old, I’ve never known a bigger child,’ Scott spat.
‘Okay that’s not helping,’ you said, pushing him off down the hallway.
Once you saw that Scott was gone, you unfroze Logan. You put a hand on his chest to stop him from chasing after Scott.
He did. Staring at you unfocused for a moment before he came back to himself.
‘You’re coming home with me,’ you said, softly, 'you should be here for a while.’
You led him out to your car. He didn’t speak as you ushered him inside your building and then into your apartment. You dumped your bag in your room then went back to the lounge where he still stood, still silent. You crossed your arms and waited. And waited.
‘Well what?’ he said quietly.
‘What have you got to say for yourself?’
Logan said nothing, just walked quickly over to you, making a grab for you. You hopped back out of reach.
‘No!’ you said, holding up a hand. It felt like you were scolding a dog, ‘don’t think you can just kiss me or drag me into bed and I’ll forget about what you did.’
‘If it wasn’t for me those kids...’
‘I don’t mean the mission! I don’t care what you did there. I mean back at the school, attacking Scott.’
‘I didn’t attack him,’ Logan said tiredly, flopping down onto the couch.
‘Oh! So what would you call punching him and slamming him against a wall?’
Logan had the decency not to attempt to reply to that. You sat down on the couch next to him.
‘I know you felt like it couldn’t wait, but Scott is the team leader. You do have to listen to him occasionally.’
Logan dropped his head back, his eyes closed. You felt him grope for your hand and you let him take it.
‘Those kids are alive and well because of you, Logan,’ you said softly, ‘and I don’t think anyone will deny that. But...what if things hadn’t gone like they did? Your recklessness put everyone at risk.’
‘Don’t lecture me, baby, please...’ he whined, rubbing a hand over his face.
‘I’m not lecturing, just telling you straight,’ you said, ‘I’m not going to pussyfoot around, Logan. Yes, the outcome was a good one but you still shouldn’t have done what you did. And you definitely didn’t need to punch Scott just for trying to install a little discipline in you.’
Logan closed his eyes and for a while the only sound was his deep breathing. He was trying to calm himself, ground himself. You kept his hand in yours while he did so, hoping that your presence would help.
‘I’m sorry I froze you,’ you said.
‘Felt really fucking weird,’ he muttered.
‘I won’t do it again. As long as you behave yourself,’ you smirked.
Logan cracked one eye open and snorted.
‘D’you do that to the kids in your classes?’
‘Nope. They know how to conduct themselves.’
‘I know how to conduct myself...’
You sighed and got up. You headed to the kitchen, wondering about making something for dinner. As you looked back at Logan, still sitting on the couch, head back, eyes closed, you sighed. You padded back to him and stood in front of him for a few moments. Logan opened his eyes and gazed up at you.
You didn’t reply but just sat down on his lap, straddling his legs. Logan let out a small sound. You reached down and unbuckled his belt, unzipped his jeans and reached in to take hold of his cock.
‘What are you planning to do with that?’ he asked, shifting a little in his seat.
You didn’t reply, just started to stroke it. Logan’s head fell back and you watched as he grew harder and bigger in your hand.
‘What do you think?’ He groaned, ‘thought I didn’t deserve this..’
‘You don’t,’ you said, leaning forward and brushing your lips over his, ‘but I’m not going to sit and watch you sulking all evening. This,’ you made him groan by squeezing him, ‘is a good distraction.’
Logan reached out to grab hold of you just as you stood up.
‘Down boy,’ you said, ‘About time you learned how to listen to orders.’
‘Whatever you say, ma’am,’ he growled.
You reached under your skirt and pulled off your underwear. You noticed Logan starting to make a move to touch himself but you stopped him.
‘’Bout time I listened to orders.’
‘Exactly,’ you smiled, ‘now, get on your knees.’
You woke later that night to find the bed empty. You felt pleasantly sore, Logan having learned his lesson about taking orders very well, and had fallen into a deep sleep. Getting up, you pulled your robe on and walked out into the lounge, looking to the kitchen as you assumed that was where Logan was. He wasn’t. He was curled up on the couch, not quite fitting but making an attempt, making small noises and seemingly very restless. He sounded like he was in distress. Maybe that’s why he moved from the bed. He told you that sometimes his nightmares would lead to his claws coming out. You figured he didn’t want to hurt you if that happened. It also made you cautious about waking him. You sat in the armchair, pulling your legs up under you, and watched him. It made your heart ache to see him so distressed but you weren’t sure you wanted to be on the receiving end of his claws if he lashed out. You knew that Logan would be mortified if that happened. At least you could watch over him and be there if he woke. You felt sad too that your bed was no longer a place of safety and comfort for him. He’d been through so much. He deserved one place where the pain couldn’t reach him.
Logan woke up stiff. Even with his healing factor, folding himself onto a small couch still made him ache. He stretched and shuffled over to the kitchen where you were already up and making coffee. You smiled at the feel of Logan’s hands on your waist and kissing your neck.
‘You could have stayed in bed,’ you said.
‘No. Didn’t want to risk it,’ he mumbled into your hair.
‘I watched over you for a bit but I fell asleep in the chair.’
He turned you, looking a little alarmed.
‘Baby, you didn’t need to do that,’ he chided.
‘I know, but I wanted to.’
You kissed him then aimed him towards the table, making him sit. You had some eggs cooking and some bacon was just about done.
‘I take it you aren’t coming to the school with me?’ you asked over your shoulder.
Logan rubbed the back of his neck.
‘Not sure it would be a good idea. Don’t think Slim would be pleased to see me.’
‘What about your classes?’
You put a plate down in front of him.
‘I’ll talk to Jean, see if someone can cover for you,’ you said, sitting down with your own plate, ‘but you are going to have to go back at some point.’
‘And you will have to apologise. Not just to Scott but to Charles and everyone else.’
Logan focused on shovelling food into his mouth and studiously ignored you. You rolled your eyes and drank your coffee.
As you were heading out the door, you turned to see Logan stood at the sink washing up the dishes from breakfast. The sight of it made you smile.
‘The vacuum's in the cupboard there if you’re feeling really domestic,’ you said.
Logan snorted. You went over to him and demanded a kiss before leaving. He grinned and obliged.
‘See? Still taking orders,’ he said, ‘like a good boy.’
You laughed, smacked his ass and left.
You were heading to your first class when Scott caught up with you in the hallway.
‘Logan’s not with me before you ask,’ you said, ‘he’s not coming in.’
‘Good. For the best. When he’s calmed down he can come back.’
‘I mean he’s calm, just not sure my methods would work for you.’
You let out a small laugh when realisation hit at what you meant and Scott blushed.
‘Seriously though, I tried talking to him but he’s stubbornly refusing to accept he did anything wrong.’
Scott huffed and shook his head.
‘Why am I not surprised?’
‘I’ll keep working on him,’ you said.
‘Hmmm, I’m sure you will,’ he said and walked off. You couldn’t help but laugh a little.
Logan’s boots felt heavy as a walked into the school. He hoped he could grab you and get out before anyone noticed him. He wasn’t that lucky.
‘Fuck..’ he muttered as he saw Scott walking towards him, ‘I’m not here to fight I just came to get Y/N.’
‘I thought she left a while ago.’
‘Couple of hours I think,’ Scott said, ‘Maybe she’s doing some errands.’
Logan thought for a moment.
‘No she’d have mentioned it.’
‘She didn’t call you to say she’d be late?’
Logan shook his head at the same time as checking his phone to make sure he’d not missed a message.
‘She didn’t have any meetings or anything?’ Logan asked.
‘No. I saw her talking to Brent Sampson outside her classroom but like I said, haven’t seen her since.’
‘Who the fuck is Brent Sampson?’
‘He’s a government official working with us. He was at the cocktail party.’
Logan thought back. The little prick that was all over you. He felt his fists curl as the memory.
‘What was he doing here?’
Scott crossed his arms and sighed.
‘We told him about the kids and he wanted to know what he could do to make it right.’
‘What’s that got to do with Y/N? She wasn’t involved with the mission.’
‘I don’t know. Maybe he just liked her.’
With that he pushed past Logan and headed off through the front door. Logan watched him go and then stood in the hallway. He sniffed the air. He didn’t like this.
Heading to your classroom, he found the door locked, as you always did at the end of the day. Something felt off. He jimmied the door open with a claw and went inside. He could smell your perfume and something else. Cheap cologne. Logan wrinkled his nose. He didn’t like the idea of some guy he didn’t know being in your classroom and he especially didn’t like the idea of this guy being there. If you weren’t here, where was he? He left the classroom and headed towards Charles’ study. He opened the door without knocking, causing Charles to look up from the book he was reading.
‘What was Sampson doing here and why was he talking to Y/N?’ he demanded.
Charles told him the same as Scott, which still didn’t answer the question of where you were. Logan started to pace. He didn’t like this. You would have let him know if you were going somewhere. You hadn’t, which meant that you maybe didn’t have a chance to. Logan was just about to say something to Charles when Kitty and Jubilee ran in. Kitty had a shoe in her hand. Your shoe.
‘Where did you find that?’ Logan asked.
‘Outside,’ she said, ‘just lying on the path.’
Why the fuck was one of your shoes lying outside? Logan looked at Charles again.
‘Something’s wrong,’ he said, ‘and I bet that asshole has got something to do with it.’
The look on Charles’ face suggested that he thought the same.
Logan took the shoe from Kitty and held it up, examining it. He went pale.
‘Blood. There’s blood on here,’ he said, dropping the shoe and running out of the room.
Charles called after him but Logan didn’t hear a thing.
