#3033 - Cassytha racemosa - Dodder-laurel

One of a genus of parasitic plant remarkably similar in appearance to the unrelated Dodder (Cuscuta sp.). The only way to tell them apart with any reliability is to wait until they flower.

Less of a problem in agriculture than true dodders, and provide edible fruit, pleasant fragrance, and useful string.

The genus is unique in the Lauraceae - most of the others are woody shrubs or trees, and none are parasitic. They can produce their own chlorophyll, however, and will do so if the host plant goes seasonally dormant.

While producing flowers leading to seeds Devil's Gut (Cassytha filiformis) is a true flowering plant! When its seeds sprout they carry enough nutrition for about 7 days. If it does not attach to a host plant with in seven days or so they plant will wither and not survive. This parasitic plant that has no chlorophyll, roots or stems is also called love vine or dodder. In this video I explain the whole story of its unique life cycle. I also compare Cassytha filiformis to a similar plant also called Dodder but a different species ( Cuscuta) entirely.
