This takes place in Doc's FMA 03 Coffee Shop AU. Al comes to visit Ed, and Ed is determined to make the place seem like one Al might want to live in, but the thing Al is most impressed by is Ed's arrogant, annoying boss.

"Whoa! Hey Ed, can you do that?!"
Edward turned from his quick discussion with Hawkeye about what kind of baked goods they'd have on the menu next week back to his guest. Al had just arrived, and Ed had been working on the menu and getting some product in the oven to distract him from his anxiety about Al's first visit to his new place.
To see what Al meant, Ed looked to the counter just as a customer retrieved their latte. Roy had, as usual, added some latte art to the drink upon finishing, something he made sure all the baristas knew how to do but hadn't gotten around to showing Ed yet.
As Ed opened his mouth to reply, Roy leaned over the counter.
"You like that kid? Those were just chasing hearts, very simple to do." Roy turned to a customer waiting by the drink pick up station they were at, at college aged student with green braids on her phone. "Mind if I take an extra moment with your drink?"
The woman looked over, the top of her phone dropping. "Wha-"
Roy, seeing that the woman hadn't noticed the interaction, explained, "I want to show this kid," and here Roy put out a hand to ruffle Al's hair "some latte art."
"Oh for sure!" The woman replied, eyes lighting up. "That will look great on my Instagram!"
"Make sure to tag us!" Roy said, flashing a charming smile as Hawkeye handed him the college girl's drink.
Roy held the drink in his left hand and the frothing pitcher in his right. Both hands were making precise, exacting movements as he carefully poured the milk strategically into the drink, creating rounded zig zags down the center. Ed was leaning strained against the counter to watch despite the fact that Roy had made sure to position everything so the boy could see.
"I still haven't taught this to Ed, though I usually teach all our baristas how to do it. I haven't figured out how to adapt it for someone with only one hand yet." Roy said it casually, easily, as though the act of pouring enough liquid from one container to another until only the surface tension kept the liquid from spilling, was no trouble at all. And all that risk of spilling for a silly design that didn't do anything for the drink's taste. "If he keeps making treats our partner Hughes would die over, he can probably get away without learning."
Ed's teeth ground together, his one hand clenched around his desire to snap at his boss. He missed the jab Hawkeye gave Roy with her elbow entirely, which spoke further to Roy's skill, as it didn't cause him to spill. Al did notice however, and his eyes rounded in further amazement as the design took shape.
"A bird!" He cried, leaping up and clapping his hands together once. Roy had put the finished latte on the counter, and the customer leaned over to snap a picture, murmuring words of admiration as she did so.
At this conclusion, Al's face turned to look at Ed, so Roy too turned his face to the kid, making sure to keep his pleasingly accomplished smile on his face and not smirking. The kid's whole demeanor screamed indignant. He could almost see the effort Ed was making not to go into a fit.
"I'll learn it Al. Roy will teach me just like he does anyone else, and I'll sort out any adaptations I need. Myself." The boy's blue eyes rose to meet Roy's gaze, and they were blazing. Roy just grinned back at him, making sure it looked as earnest as possible.
"That's the spirit! Hey Hawkeye, why don't you make me an espresso. It's been a while since I've practiced my more elaborate designs." Roy knew Hawkeye heard him even though he didn't take his eyes off of Ed. "And after all, we should make Ed's brother feel right at home don't you think?" He heard Hawkeye's sigh, but she didn't say anything, so he knew she was making the espresso.
"You're going to do another one?" Al asked eagerly, looking up at Roy. Roy had to hold back a laugh. The contrast between the two boys was remarkable. There didn't seem to be anything particularly angry about this young boy who'd been stuck in the system. But Ed was constantly burning with it. Always assuming and ready for a fight. If only the boy could learn to lighten up, realize that the more he fought, the more he opened himself up to attack.
"Don't you take your espressos black?" Ed managed to get out without sounding too vicious, though there was enough in his voice to make Al look at him. The boy started to reach out a hand to Ed, but the older boy flinched ever so slightly. Al's hand dropped.
Ed cursed himself for concerning Al. Roy always knew how to hit all his buttons. He was acting all generous and benevolent showing off to Al, but he was only doing it annoy Ed. Oh that'd sound great explaining to Al. 'Yeah I was mad. The dude was only being nice to you because he knew it would piss me off.' He could just picture it, Al tilting his head in confusion, asking, 'Why would it piss you off for him to be nice to me?' Prick.
Hawkeye slid the espresso onto the counter in front of Roy, who immediately got to work on his next project. Ed was both relieved and exasperated by how quickly Al's mood went from confused dejection to absorbed in the stupid task.
"I'm going to go check on my bars." Ed said abruptly, heading to go by the oven while this played out. Maybe Roy would tire of it.
Al watched him go for a moment, wondering once again what he had done wrong. It had been a while since he'd seen his brother. Was he mad at him? He hadn't sent as many letters as he used to, but he hadn't gotten the new address until recently!
A sound of delight made him turn back to see what was happening in the espresso cup. The girl who had let this man put a bird in her latte was still at the counter, watching, and she'd made the noise as the swirling designs had become a wreath in the cup. But he wasn't done there. He made little loops to connect them, and Al was amazed by his skill to make such tight and clear lines with milk. It was starting to look like some sort of badge, but Al couldn't sort out what kind. He tilted his head to try and make it out, and then the artists was turning the mug so Al could see it as the artist had seen it. Al had been seeing it upside down, but now that it was right side up, he saw, "It's a lion! Whoa! That's really amazing!" He said without really thinking about it. He gave a laugh and said, "I wish I could have coffee!"
"You could have a hot chocolate." The man with such dark hair and eyes said. There was something about his look, something unreadable even as he smiled pleasantly at Al. Maybe that's why Ed didn't like him. Ed didn't like it when he couldn't figure something out, and he certainly didn't seem like the kind of guy who would be artsy and love animals!
"Well yeah, but I don't really have any money on me." He blushed as he said it, suddenly realizing how this sounded. He wouldn't have been able to have a coffee even if he could. He'd just meant it to express how much he liked the art, a way to let the man know it was so good he'd want it himself if he could. He didn't know how to explain that though, especially given how embarrassed he suddenly was about it.
The man laughed pleasantly. "I was offering, not trying to make a commission. What do you think, Hawkeye, can we afford to get the kid a hot chocolate on the house?"
"My name's Al." Al piped up before another blush spread on his cheeks. It shouldn't matter if this guy knew his name, but he was always 'one of the kids' back home. Only Al to his peers, never to the adults.
"One of them." The large blonde woman behind the bar said as she set down another drink. Al hadn't yet accepted a hot chocolate, and she hadn't even acknowledged Roy's request, and yet he was pretty sure this newest drink on the counter was exactly that. Al didn't like handouts, but somehow, this didn't feel like that. He eyed the woman. She seemed kind of scary to him, and yet he got a feeling she had a kind soul. Before he could say anything though, she had moved on, keeping busy behind the bar.
"Do you like bunnies Al?" Roy asked as he seemed to be preparing his utensils for some more art.
In a quiet, amazed voice, Al whispered, "They're my favorite."
--
"I got Disney Plus for the month" Ed cut into Al's chattering about the bunny Roy had made him and how good the hot chocolate was and how nice his bosses are. He simply couldn't take any more of it. Al hadn't said a word about the apartment, and Ed was afraid he couldn't think of anything nice to say about it and so felt like he had to go on about the things he did like. The boy had said a few nice things about the meal and had genuinely seemed to enjoy it. Ed had been torn between making Al something really neat and special to show him that Ed too had talents, but he had decided on their mother's Mac and Cheese recipe. He could tell that it had made Al a little emotional, so the boy hadn't said that much about it, but Ed could at least take comfort in knowing that he had enjoyed it, that it had meant something to him.
But here he was, talking about fucking Roy again, and he simply couldn't guarantee he wasn't going to snap soon if it went on. "I figured you might enjoy picking out something to watch."
Al's eyes lit up, and he nodded vigorously. Now if only Ed had a decent TV. His current one was just a 32'' monitor pretty much. The curbside pick up couch was pushed most of the way into the small living room just to be somewhat close both for better viewing, and so that Ed didn't have to turn up the volume very high. Hawkeye got persnickety about TV noises carrying to her apartment.
"Here, let me get it up for you, and you can go through the catalogue." Ed said, grabbing the remote.
"Are you going to watch with me?" Al asked, eyes shining.
"Yeah buddy. But I will need to be in and out with my baking, and I have some studying to do too, so don't mind if I'm moving around or on the computer." Ed said, handing the remote over to Al now that he was in the kids section of Disney's movie collections.
Al flopped onto the couch and nuzzled his way in. Ed tossed him a throw blanket which Al pulled around him despite the apartment being more than warm enough. "Thanks Ed." Al said, a content smile on his face.
"Any time Al." Ed replied, sitting back down at the two person dining table he'd squeezed between the kitchen and living room. It was a tight fit, but it was easier to study at a table.
As Al got immersed in the TV, Ed, muting his computer, brought up videos on latte art, paying close attention to any videos of the art being done with the cup resting on the countertop, which he saw wasn't entirely rare. Roy's way was never the only the one.

Fandoms thrive on cooperation, discussion, playful arguments, and fanworks.
Ficcers, artists, and other crafters thrive on feedback and knowing we caused more art to appear.
So, it's time for all of us to add to the pool of stuff that exists for things we love! Let our beloved fellow creators know that they aren't just screaming into the void and that they are in fact adding to their communities! Also in this specific case, give back to @docholligay (especially right after Eight Days).
Process/Rules:
1. Pick up to 3 fanworks you've made- don't have to have been made this year, but they do have to be stuff you can speak to your core motivation/inspiration for!
2. Fill out this form by noon CST on November 30th!
3. Keep an eye out for your tax return- aka, the person whose work you'll do a derivation of- to be assigned by December 3rd.
4. Make a derivation of one of that person's ideas by the end of New Year's Day 2026, post it somewhere, and send @katrani the link to be included in a masterpost!
Clarifications:
-the fandoms your pieces are from should be something related to one of Doc's mainstays (Sailor Moon, Overwatch, etc.) or at least something she's liveblogging, BUT FOLLOW HER SPOILER RULES. So nothing past FMA ep 23, or Blue-Eye Samurai ep 3, for example.
-It's up to 3 works so that there's a little bit of choice in case an idea doesn't spark immediately, but also we don't want to cause decision paralysis.
-"Derivation" can be anything from narrating/illustrating an art/fic scene; to making a follow-up or lead-in; to just doing your own thing with the base idea! Wanna record a song about it or crochet a hat to match the vibes? Those're fine! The goal is cooperative creativity!
-ETA: You do not have to match the specific fandom for your derivation! If someone goes "I did a HaruMichi Beauty and the Beast" you can make a Pharmercy one!
- @katrani is running this because Doc does way too much at the end of the year but thought it would still be a fun community event! Please send katrani questions/feedback not doc!!!! Thank you!
It's really difficult not to marry Maes Hughes and I'm not sure why I'm trying.
That gimme aside...
God, this is legitimately tough, because they're both my type (I have a lot of types but they both land squarely in one), and also both... problems. Like. I'm not actually sure I'd manage to successfully fuck Riza Hawkeye, because my hangups interact with hers... problematically. In that I'm- I'm of the opinion that at least a bit of emotional vulnerability is necessary for good sex and I have said, recently, that it takes the emotional equivalent of borrowing the Jaws of Life from the local firefighters to get me to do that.
Riza Hawkeye is not bringing that machinery. I strongly suspect that what actually happens is that I make some calculated half-approach to calibrate whether I'm getting enough of an "interested" signal to risk a firmer proposition, don't get much reaction, and cut my losses.
Roy Mustang, on the other hand, is a smug clever man whose work draws attention to his hands, which I am also extremely not immune to; and he's witty and emotionally aware enough that he can probably bait me into exposing some kind of vulnerability. Which he may then be a complete prick about. But like, I responded positively to that post that goes "casual sex implies the existence of ranked competitive sex" for a reason: I think that would actually work for me. We'd fuck, and probably both be trying to win, and that would work more than well enough for a one-off encounter.
Maes Hughes, as noted, is a man to come home to, and plenty of wordcount has been spilled on this already.
This proves, I think, that I'm more or less with you on "characters I like" not being the same as "characters I'm attracted to," because I'm leaving Hawkeye on read* despite her being the one I'm probably most unhinged about. I just- realistically the other two just slot better into what I want from F and M.
God I wanted to like kill la kill but. My god. My god.
Truly, Kill la Kill is always going to be that one show where I watch it and go god yes, I absolutely fuck with Studio Trigger doing its normal crazy ass hyper-stylised animation that just makes my brain happy. And the freedom vs conformity themes! Great stuff.
On the other, truly, I think every time I've recommended it to someone it's been with the caveat 'look you'll probably hate it. and I understand why'. And they confirm they couldn't get past the first episode and I respond 'you know that's fair'.

Got this lovely postcard the other day from Lena (care of @docholligay) and forgot to post it.
Win!
Em and I are holed up here just outside the park, and you were right, is beautiful, absolutely something to see. You did spoil us with the room, but I suppose it is only your 1st anniversary the once.
21. do they have an idea about how they’ll die? do you?
Ahahah, I love you being on brand. Never change.
She has in fact died died twice (so far). Once when refusing to give up the location of Strahd's much sought-after vampire hunter nemesis - being a stubborn righteous ass, she got pretty beat up and blood-sucked, then dropped off one of the towers of Castle Ravenloft to her death. She got brought back a few in-game days later thanks to said vampire hunter having a scroll of Raise Dead and being convinced by the party that, if nothing else, a glowy smitey paladin was pretty useful in the fight against a vampire, so it was worth it. Recovering from that is... well, still ongoing.
The second one happened when facing some extremely pissed off Strahd harassment just before the endgame, engaging him in melee and trying to keep his attention away from the rest of her exhausted companions as well as the Martikov family - great allies of the party who were at the moment providing desperately needed sanctuary in their winery (and also I love them). Strahd had a magical fire shield up which meant each attack on him was… costly, to say the least. This one was very brief, as one of the family's three precious magical gems was sacrificed to bring her back almost as soon as Strahd, that absolute bastard, left after a brief gloat and threat or twenty. This was also very costly for the artificer in our party, as the backlash of tinkering with the gem to unleash its magical properties ultimately led to him losing his arm. It was a very, very grim time and a real “darkest before the dawn” moment nearing the end of the whole Barovian misadventure.
I know player character death gets handled wildly differently depending on the table. Some folks love permadeath and going through a dozen characters and just rolling (haha) with whatever the dice decide, while some lean fully into playing in worlds where bringing someone back from the dead is just a couple of diamonds and a brief cleric visit away. I feel like I’ve played in games that fell all throughout the spectrum, but in this particular case we went more narrative focused than probably ever before. In our discussions with the DM about how we'd even handle character death in the campaign we all agreed bringing in new outsider characters would be kind of a pain and would ring pretty hollow, so we agreed we'd use the scarce and often very costly possibilities given in the adventure itself, and, if all else failed, we'd go the Revenant route - i.e. whoever dies can be some brand of Too Angry To Die, swear to do one last thing (probably defeating Strahd and freeing the land in this particular case), and come back as an extremely driven undead version of themselves, a sad kind of semi-existence, that, bittersweetly, is guaranteed to end when the task is accomplished. It never actually came to this, as it happens, though each member of the 3-strong party had a brush with it. But it was certainly a rather grim (and appropriate) possibility.
The Silver Flame, which Ramiel formally belongs to via her knightly order, believes that the souls of the worthy and faithful are supposed to join the flame after death and strengthen it in protecting the world from demons/fiends/all manner of evil - so essentially she expects the fight to never really end. Barovia, however, is a prison for a specific evil lord - which also happens to be a prison for the souls of anyone who dies within it. So not only was that hanging over her, but she experienced a small, brief taste of it (twice!) - the revenant option doesn’t seem so bad anymore, suddenly.
All of this is to say, the possibilities were and are many and varied, but I am absolutely certain this is not a person who is going to die peacefully in her sleep at a venerable age, and so is she.
The fact that when you think of soup, you think of me, fills me with joy
I know plenty of people who like soup. But I don't think I know anyone who loves it quite like you do. Soup has two meanings for me. One is a reference you wouldn't understand but the other is that good stuff that gives meaning to life for people named Doc who are you.
