Today’s villain is Doc Hopper from The Muppet Movie
Doc Hopper was a veteran
As I was watching The Muppet Movie today for probably the several hundredth time in my life, I noticed a detail for the first time. Throughout the movie, Doc Hopper wears three lapel pins. On his right lapel, he wears a little frog head. Makes sense, since he has a dream of opening a thousand frog leg restaurants. On his left lapel, he wears an American flag, and right below that, he wears the collar rank device of a third class petty officer in the United States Coast Guard.
If we assume that Doc Hopper was more or less the same age as Charles Durning, that would mean he probably served in the Coast Guard during World War II. You have to wonder if he had a bad experience with frogs at some point.
For what it’s worth, Charles Durning was himself a US Army veteran, having landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day and awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his injuries and actions that day.
