I can't have a fever, I have surgery tomorrow (pt. 1)
Summary: the aftermath of a twelve hour long surgery featuring our favorite professor/resident duo and Yulje's chaotic doctors
Jaehak was still smiling when Junwan abruptly took off his glasses and let out a sigh in relief.
"Everything will go well, right?" He asked, nervously. Since when did his professor get nervous?
"Professor Kim, you perform this surgery every day. What's with you?" Jaehak chuckled, turning to face him. "The surgery went well, you know."
"Well," Junwan exhaled, quickly returning his glasses and Jaehak's curious gaze as he continued, ever the meticulous (and slightly pessimistic) surgeon. "We have to reduce the IO ratio to make the swelling go down."
Medical note: "IO" = Input-output
He paused.
"Let's close her up in a few days, okay?"
Doctor Do almost couldn't believe his eyes as he witnessed what could be considered a CS department miracle.
"Keep monitoring her to see if she's bleeding and make sure she's urinating well, okay?" A drop of sweat ran down the side of Worried Professor Kim Junwan's cheek.
Jaehak nodded, because what else was he supposed to do? Goodness, would the other residents even believe him when (not if) he runs over to tell them about this?
"Arachi?" Junwan repeated, making direct eye contact with him.
The corners of Jaehak's lips lifted up even higher as he nodded a second time, astounded. What was up with Professor Kim today?
"Arachi?"
He couldn't help it anymore.
Jaehak's signature, happy-go-lucky, I-love-you-Professor grin was on full display as he bobbed his head enthusiastically in response.
"Okay," Junwan finally acquiesced, anxiously rubbing the back of his neck.
Jaehak's smile never left his face as he looked at him, suddenly overcome with pride and softness for someone who was popularly known as the Thanos of Yulje.
Aigoo, so you do get worried after all, gyusunim.
Gosh!
He could almost pinch his professor's cheeks.
"See you, Professor Kim!" Doctor Do beamed.
"Yeah, yeah, don't forget to check on the patient, alright?"
"De, gyusunim~!"
Junwan bid Jaehak a quick wave goodbye as per usual, wondering what sort of oddity fueled his chief resident's sunny disposition this time.
He quickly made his way down the hall, barely missing Jeongwon as he swayed slightly.
"Late night?" Jeongwon asked, steadying him.
"Early morning," Junwan answered. "Thanks."
"And no—" he interrupted the pediatric surgeon before he even had the chance to ask— "I am not driving home. So you can stop worrying now, Andrea. Save that concern for your patients."
"Right, my patients!" Jeongwon's eyes lit up immediately. "Did I tell you that Wooyoung's getting discharged tomorrow? And after nearly five months! I'm so happy." He held Junwan's wrist. "Are you free later? We could—"
"Sure. I'm glad your patient is doing well."
He stared at him for a few seconds. Despite the fact that his friend would absolutely jump at the offer of a free meal, it usually took a little more time to convince him, especially now that he was seeing someone. Jeongwon hadn't even mentioned that he was inviting him for dinner with the rest of the band.
"Are you okay?"
Junwan raised an eyebrow. "Uh, yes? Why?"
"Ah, it's nothing." Jeongwon shook his head. Maybe he was just overthinking things. "Take it easy," he reminded him, as always.
"Araso, eomma." Junwan rolled his eyes, the two of them parting ways as they took opposite turns at the end of the hall.
Junwan pulled out his desk drawer, pocketing his phone and wallet (and a few chocolates.)
"I still have some time to rest," he muttered to himself following a quick glance at the clock. He sat down. "Maybe I can read up on a few charts before heading home..."
The room was quiet a few moments later, the cab waiting downstairs driving away without its designated passenger.
Let's just say that it was a good thing Ikjun left the small pillow he got for Uju on Junwan's desk after stealing some of his sweets.
Ikjun nearly fell out of his seat.
"And then what?!" He exclaimed, because of course he was sitting with Jaehak, Professor Bong, Seokmin, Hongdo, and Yunbok in the cafeteria, him being Yulje Medical Center's rare species of social butterfly.
"He wouldn't stop giving me follow-up instructions for monitoring and asked me if I understood three times. And get this!" The four of them leaned forward expectantly as Jaehak paused. "He only did it when they left the room this time. When they left! I was in absolute shock."
"Are you sure we're talking about the same Professor Kim Junwan?" Professor Bong eyed him warily.
Yunbok stifled a giggle. "I can't believe you actually put your heads together to check the professor's temperature."
"What did he say to you after?" Hongdo asked.
"You must've gotten an earful," Seokmin huffed.
Professor Bong sat back. "I think we all know the answer to that."
"'You fool.'" They all said in unison, bursting into laughter.
"Well, you know what they say." Ikjun winked. "Two heads are better than one!"
They were still catching their breaths when Songhwa approached their table.
"Ooh, what brings you here, Professor Chae? Would you like to hear the story too?"
"I think everyone in the entire cafeteria heard it, Doctor Do," she teased before turning to Ikjun. "Speaking of Junwan, have you seen him? Jeongwon went back to their place to fetch something and said he wasn't there. Seokhyeong hasn't seen him around the hospital either."
"Huh, that's weird. Have you checked their office?"
"I was just about to. Now come on, Gossip King."
"Bye guys! Update me later okay— hey!"
Songhwa not-so-discreetly hid her smile as she grabbed his hand and pulled him away, Ikjun playfully swinging their arms back and forth.
"Are they...?" Seokmin started.
"Nope. But we all wish they were." Professor Bong shrugged, amused at their interest. "I'd say give them more time. A few years, tops."
"Awwww," the twins frowned. "I think they'd be a cute couple," Yongdo added.
Jaehak pouted.
"Me too."
Click!
"Hey, Ikjun," Seokhyeong put a hand on his shoulder as the camera clicked away.
"What, you against blackmail?"
"No, I was going to tell you to take more."
Ikjun grinned. "Why you little—"
"Shh, you'll wake him up!" Songhwa squealed, one hundred percent on board. "Try asking him a question."
"Okay," Jeongwon wheezed, barely keeping it together, "Junwan-ah, is it true that you buy spicy tteokbokki on purpose because you know I can't eat it?"
"Do you really order more when you know I'm paying?" Seokhyeong added, curious and very aware of the fact that he could never ask him this if he were awake.
"De," Junwan mumbled, half-asleep.
"Ah, you sekki—" they cursed together, about to shake him by the shoulders before Ikjun shushed them with his finger.
"This is the opportunity of a lifetime, guys, give me a minute."
Ikjun tried not to look at the cute duck plushie cushioning Junwan's head, a smirk gracing his hilarious face as he whispered:
"Can you tell us what happened in Hawaii?"
