Who the Hell is: Andries Taube
(A short Original Character primer)
Taube was a Sergeant in the Toreguarde City Watch, assigned to Precinct Eight. By the time of the Destiny's New Servants Campaign he is retired.
Tell us about him?
Taube has the standard height and built of a dwarf, with a ruddy complexion. His remaining eye is a deep, emerald green and his long hair and beard are "quartz" white. He keeps his long beard bound in bands and beads.
On duty, he wears the standard Watch leather armour, but wields a warpick (also known as a Horseman's pick). Off-duty, he prefers long tunics and loose trews.
Temperament-wise, he's stern and doesn't suffer fools. Even after all his years as a Guard and then Watchman, he still believes that justice is possible and is tenacious in seeing it delt. That's not to say he's not capable of a smile. He finds joy in those students who are clever and sensible, and takes pride in being able to beat anyone at backgammon.
How does he fit in with DNS?
When Elowyn joined the watch at the tender age of 16, Taube was already a venerable 178 (age equivalence of 50s). This, and having lost an eye some years previous, limited him to desk duties and teaching. He was assigned to Elowyn as her first partner and instructional officer. She recalls him fondly, and credits him as the basis for much of her sterling police work.
At 180 years old, Taube retired to Stonebridge. There he finally married Katrin, the smith he'd been courting for many years, and the two had many more comfortable years together.
Who is he in real-world development terms?
Taube has only ever appeared in fiction – he was not an NPC in the game. He's first mentioned in New Partners, Forever Partners amongst the list of Watch partners Elowyn had prior to Farren Breakwood. His role in Elo's early life is then extrapolated upon in An Education in Watching (TBP 10 Jan 2025), and he's mentioned in passing in various other stories.
