it is my opinion that all DMs should have to play through an absolutely terrible encounter. An encounter that drains the game of it's life and reduces it to just turn based combat. An encounter that leaves the party miserable and hating the campaign. An encounter where they are stuck unable to do anything because they got stunned on the first round and there's 10 different creatures in the turn cycle. An encounter where they're struggling to fight a creature that would be of hard difficulty for a party 2-3 levels above them with double the players. An encounter where they're so frustrated that they are struggling to hold back tears because of how frustrated they are. An encounter where it takes 2 hours, 5 healing spells, and 3 health potions to kill off the minions and reduce the boss to half health in the very first dungeon of the campaign.
I'm not saying this because I want to be rude or I hate DMs and want them to suffer, I'm saying it because they need to learn what not to do. Because so many DMs see the players as their enemies, working against them instead of with them. And that's what makes the game terrible to play, you're supposed to work with your players to create a story that everyone enjoys not fight against them at every turn and then whine when they do too much damage to the monster you put them in combat with. And really it sucks that I feel the need to say this because maybe it's just me or maybe it's just the people I play with but in the 5 campaigns I've participated in, only one has been enjoyable, and that was because the DM was a person who's been playing for years and wanted to try DMing.
So this is a letter to all the DMs who value pointless combat over building a story and to all the players who have been stuck with shitty DMs in shitty campaigns.
Not all combat needs to be difficult. Not all quests need combat. Not all characters are meant for combat. And not all players are meant for combat.
Combat is a tool to enhance your story and further the plot, not the point of the game.
Don't be the DM that leaves your players hating the game.
And don't be the player who looks at a rp focused character and says they are useless to the party.
Be the player who knows when to call it quits on a bad campaign.
And be the DM that listens to the players.
