DIY : A Postcard in a fancy frame

This is another DIY that simply consists in finding a better display for your postcards. I personally have ten billions postcards and I thought I should do them justice. Also it’s not about customizing an existing frame, but rather about creating a new one from scrap.

Here are the materials you will need :

Thick cardboard that’s preferably purposed for arts and crafts (not in the picture). This will be the base of your frame and will support the clay parts.

Polymere clay : I think it’s lighter than average clay and doesn’t dry as fast. You can use a certain type of clay that needs to be cooked in the oven, but I don’t trust mine so I used a type that dries in 48h. You can also use a coloured paste, but I think painting it adds a nice finishing touch.

Acrylic paint : it requires less water than other types of paint, dries faster and is more opaque.

Varnish or average white glue : varnish is a safer option but white glue works as well and doesn’t leave traces.

Permanent glue or repositionable adhesive paste : it depends on whether you want the same postcard in your frame forever or whether you want to change it and reuse that postcard. I used repositionable adhesive paste.

Materials needed to hang a frame. I guess you can find those in many drugstores, but I don’t know the proper name.

Cut the cardboard into a base for your frame that’s a bit larger than the postcard you chose. Use the edges of your postcard to draw an outline that will be used as a reference when you mold the clay.

Molding the clay. I suggest you first mold the outline, using the one you’ve traced on the cardboard as a reference (I traced an outline on a transparent tray that I’ve also been using to let the frame dry afterwards). Some tips :

You can smoothen the eventual cracks in the clay with wet fingers.

It doesn’t have to be completely symetrical. Clay doesn’t generally look completely smooth, but I think there’s a nice quirky feel to it.

Try to respect the time it takes to dry.

Thinner bits might fall too easily or not be solid enough.

Painting your frame. I’ve used a colour that’s between pastel and bright. you obviously need to find a colour that matches your postcard nicely. Use white glue or varnish when the paint is dry to protect it. I’m really curious of how it would look with gold or rosegold spray

Do not forget to paint the sides of your cardboard frame, and any part that might be visible.

While the paint is drying, attach a hook / ring to the cardboard part of your frame to hang it.

Use repositionable adhesive paste to stick your postcard to the frame. Then use the same paste or permanent glue to stick the dry clay part to the cardboard part in order to assemble your frame.

You can now hang your frame wherever you please.
