This story takes place in England after World War I. After the death of his grandfather, Hugh Anthony Disward, also known as Huey, receives a mysterious key and according to his will, must take custody of the Bibliotheca Mystica de Dantalian in order to inherit his estate and all his possessions. Upon meeting Dalian, a child living at the estate, he learns that she is the guardian of the Archives which contain forbidden knowledge stored in thousands of magic books called "Phantom Books". Upon agreeing to become Dalian's new Keykeeper, Huey joins her into investigating incidents regarding people misusing the power of the Phantom Books, most of them with tragic consequences, and using his power as Keykeeper to seal the power of the Phantom Books and restore order to the area. Review:
The Mystic Archives of Dantalian is an anime from the Summer of 2011. Based on a manga and a light novel, the story in each episode is usually inclusive to that episode, however small threads of overarching plot connect the stories. The stories are easily watchable since you are almost always guaranteed a payoff in the end. The general plot revolves around the Holmes/Watson-esc relationship of Dalian and Hugh Anthony Disward.
After watching through all 12 episodes of the series I have to wonder how the light novels were set up. The show has a pretty fast pace (in that each episode is a complete story) so the novels either contain multiple stories, or the show cut down on a lot of information. If the latter is true than I think the creators might have lost a chance to give the show and its characters a bit more depth. Going along with this is the fact that I very rarely felt that the main characters were in any danger since I knew that they would be fine at the end of the episode. Without cliffhangers the suspense level drops just a bit.
Despite all that, the show does do a good job in acquainting the audience with the main characters since they are central to (almost) every episode. The side characters that you see once or a few times show some real personality but it feels like they get cut short by the fact that a second season was never produced. I really saw a lot of potential for some of them especially the side characters from an episode in which Hugh and Dalian were absent. I sense some extremely interesting lore underneath the surface of this anime, but it is sadly never delivered upon.
In terms of animation I would rate the show as above average to great. Some moments are extremely stylistic. Episode 9 is actually drawn in a completely different art style which is reminiscent of colored pencil sketches. It really is an amazing use of a jarringly different art style. I would recommend the series based on this episode alone. Definitely check it out. Another interesting fact about the animation is that the clothing features was designed by Baby, The Stars Shine Bright which is a major Japanese clothing brand focused on Lolita style dresses. This explains why the clothing in the show is so well designed and intricate. You can really tell how much time was devoted to each dress design.
My main negative criticism would have to be the shallow story elements that never get fleshed out. Obviously the creators of the show were hoping for another season which would have made this show (and its universe) deeper and fully realized. If anything the show has piqued my interest in the light novels and manga.
Final Suggestion:
Check this show out. Even if you are not inclined to watch all of the episodes you can really get a sense of the series with only a few, though you would be doing yourself a disservice if you passed over episode 9. The tone and pace of the show will keep even the most casual anime watcher interested, and the book and history references will have bibliophiles watching until the end.

Everything is growing and being destroyed, it's like a symphony, it's beautiful simply because it exists.
