Today marks the 50th anniversary of the last football game played by the university at the varsity level. The Panther football team was active between 1899-1974. Their final game was played November 16th, 1974 against the UW-Whitewater Warhawks. The panthers won their final game but ended the season with 4-6 record. The team experienced its peak performance and popularity in the 40's and 50's, but following the 1974 season the athletic department terminated the program due to lack of funding and student engagement. However, football is not completely absent from UWM. The campus has had a club football program since 2003.
