It’s a little hard to explain, so I’ll do my best (also, my English isn't very good, so I sometimes use a translator. Even so, I hope you can understand what I'm saying 🏃♀️🏃♀️)
In terms of design, I often use old OCs; I go through my old drawings of OCs that aren’t being used. If I see that one of them has the potential to become a fan OC, I start redesigning it so it fits better! To design my characters, I look at absolutely ALL the character designs related to what interests me: Are the designs simple? Do they have more details? What drawing style is used? What is this inspired by? Then I start looking for references by checking out other fan OCs in the fandom! it helps a lot!
In general, I always study what I’m working on first! for example, Bendy! To create my OC Coco, I used an old design I had lying around, then looked for BATIM OCs for more inspiration, then studied the designs of Bendy, Boris, Alice... Heck, even those of the Butcher Gang or the designs from the Bendy comics! Everything helps! I started comparing my Coco design from back then with the character designs of the official material and began noticing and adjusting things based on that
Honestly, the explanation is long and I’m probably explaining it terribly...sorry! But hey, remember that we’re all here making OCs for fun and creativity! I’m just obsessive with details 😭
