You know what? This is a very valid question.

I personally think endurance in comics is a muscle. 

That is to say - just like every other skill, you must TRAIN yourself to make longer and longer comics. You can’t just say ‘I’m gonna make a 130 page epic!’ and go at it. It just won’t work. You’ll get a mental cramp, exhaust yourself, and end up disappointed.

When I first started making comics, I started by making single page comics with a few panels in it. Literally, my first comics on tumblr were only a page long:

You have to start small. You have to train yourself to think of how to START and FINISH your comic in one page.... then in three pages... then in ten pages. In fact, drawing a one-page comic correctly* (not that there’s a single correct way to do it, but in the sense that it flows, gets the idea across, etc) is sometimes WAY more difficult than drawing a ten-page comic!!!

Each of the comics I draw for WD!Steven are also self-contained mini-stories. Yes there’s an overarching plot but you have to think small and use those small things like building blocks. 

I don’t think I started drawing multi-page stories until 5 years ago. And even after that, I drew about 30 10-page-long comics before I ever graduated into a longer story. My first attempt at a longer chapter-like story was Pearls before SW1N3. And it wasn’t really all that good, but it got WAY better and I learned a lot. So when I started WD!Steven, I already had about 8 years behind me of making small funny comics. 

What this all means is - you HAVE to give yourself practice time. You can’t just expect your brain to hit the ground running in terms of a long-ass comic any more than you can expect your body to win a marathon without having done tons of practice. 

I’m able to marathon WD!Steven now because my brain has developed the necessary ‘muscles’ for the task. Also, I know how to pace myself - I keep a good pace until I’m tired and then I take a break (hiatus) and slow down without fully stopping - and that’s an ability I developed during my earlier comics!

Anyway, that’s about all I’ve got.
