There's something really special about the way fanzines and diskmags often acted as forums for the communities that published them. There's a certain bittersweet quality to flicking through the correspondence pages of an old zine and seeing people shout out their buddies from around the world; people who have never met and never will but who have, through their shared love of something, formed a genuine connection regardless. I get serious anemoia for this whole method of communication.
What we have now - with our web forums and Discords and social media - is probably better; it's certainly more convenient! I wouldn't trade my online friends for anything, but it is heartwarming to know that people found a way to form these kinds of communities across international borders even before we had easy access to the 'net.
