I knew that our break-up with Dish Network would not be pretty.

Not that our 16-year relationship hadn't had its rough patches: the inexplicable jump in subscription rates, the sudden disappearance of the Detroit Tigers broadcasts, the phone calls, the threat, the recriminations ...

But inertia had taken over. We were mired in the comfort of familiarity.

Yet, we knew all along that TV-wise, were were stuck in the past - paying for channels we never watched; making big monthly payments, while watching mainly PBS.

This is, after all, the age of a la carte TV. Why were we buying the buffet and eating only a salad?
