Its been a couple days. I need to post or people will worry. My mom’s medical stuff is not great right now. She has a hernia. And she should have been getting it fixed today. But because assholes automatically assume weight equals heart issues, its been put off for two weeks until after a stress test. My mom’s heart is fine, I mean other then she can’t eat, exercise, or move at the moment. Apparently its considered elective as long as you aren’t going to die without the process. Despite the fact that she can’t actually exist in a day to day life. If she was working at the moment, well, she couldn’t be. Supposedly if she consistently starts throwing up we can take her to the ER for non elective surgery.
Funny thing is from my college days, I remember the word elective. It means your life won’t be affected if you don’t have it. It means optional. Its not like Mom could fix the hernia through good diet, given you know, she can’t really eat or digest anything at the moment. Exercise? Her hernia and knees are both giving her shit because no one will operate on her.
I wanted to sock the woman who called it and elective surgery yesterday. Elective is plastic surgery. Elective is a surgery that could improve your life, but at the moment you’re living day to day quite well, without pain or inconvenience.
“Well we wouldn’t want you to code on the table.”
Isn’t that her right to decide? You’re not even giving her a choice. Apparently for those who might have gained weight, ignoring the fact that such weight gain is generally the result of some other issue like injuries, they are expected to either magically lose it or waste away and die.
My mother has only gained weight in forever because of medical conditions that limited her mobility. And if even one of those procedures had focused on fixing her as soon as possible, then maybe she would have been able to get on her feet and exercise more.
Let me tell you a thing.
No one overweight sits around eating all day.
They are overweight, because:
They don’t have the financial ability to eat well. Fun fact, starvation can cause you to retain weight as an evolutionary impulse. So whatever you do never eat less then 1500 calories. Your body will not lose weight, only keep.
Physical discomfort. You could be an olympic athlete, but if you retain back or neck injury, you aren’t going to be able to keep active. Your metabolism will slow down.
Depression and anxiety can keep you from eating well and exercising.
We need to stop treating weight like a cause of illness, and ask why that weight gain occurred.
