I’m really sitting with this question since Dr Debbie Bargallie and Dr Chelsea Bond held us to task at the #DisenchantedDiversity workshop. As a storyteller, there have been instances where I can see the pornography of violence at play, with myself as the potentially pimped out victim-character waiting for sympathy/charity/saviour. To Decolonize, for me, is to reclaim what was taken and honor what we have inherited and learned from our ancestors. To undo oppression and -isms. Ex: Receiving a blessing upon visiting an elder, we would say, “Bendicion Abuela,” and she would kiss us and say, “Que Dios te bendiga”. We kept that. These are parts of culture. Our fabric & People-ness . . I get concerned when I hear “decolonize this & that” without a strong rooted cord into the womb of Mama Earth & People’s struggles. So I’ve sat and asked myself, “Can Whiteness really Decolonize?” . . Colonization is when a dominant group takes over, extracts people, resources, land, and it’s native customs. This act has occurred all over the globe. The kidnapping slaves, raping of women, child labor, Indigenous/ Aboriginal Peoples working for little to nothing on lands on which they were raised, political imprisonment, the enforcement of religion, & genocide- to name a few. . . Yes these acts of coloniality have left Wounding on the psychological, physical and spiritual well being of People. And yes, we need to practice collective healing & HUMANIZE what has been DEHUMANIZED & perpetrated. But honestly sometimes I cringe. “How can the Oppressor in real time SUPPORT our healing & what do we do we want that to look like?”. . We need to ensure that we don’t attempt to get rid of those colonized practices by those operating fully under those practices.
