LIFENOW.ROCKS “Don’t touch the tortoises,” is the last bit of advice #DiscoverGalapagos has to offer this week 🐢...“These great monsters” is what Darwin called the lumbering reptiles who are today considered the real icons of the archipelago and from whom the Galápagos received its name. The largest living species of tortoise, the Galápagos giant tortoise, get as heavy as four grown men, live for up to 150 years and can store enough fat to go for a year without eating or drinking anything. Impressive – just like everything here is!..Geographical isolation has helped protect this fragile ecosystem, in fact, 95% of native wildlife is still intact. Hopefully, by following the “take nothing but photos, leave nothing but tracks”-rules, we will be able to preserve the unique flora and fauna that was the origin of Charles Darwin’s “Origin of Species” - 📸 @olenamickolson..
