Halal Discada

First breakfast cook on the skottle.  Picked this up to cook on while camping, but have it set up on the porch right now to get the hang of using it.

So far, it’s working magnificently!  The hashbrowns came out perfect.  The eggs were a little too crispy on the bottom in a few spots, but that can easily be resolved with better tuning of the flame.  Pretty good for a first attempt, though!  Breakfast was delicious.

A skottle is a South African plow disc cooker.  They are pretty common worldwide, with other variations also called a “cowboy wok” or “discada.”  It exists somewhere on the spectrum between a true wok and a flattop griddle.

It’s basically a thick carbon steel disc with a shallow depression in the middle, mounted on three legs with a small one-burner butane/propane stove mounted under it.  The legs come off and collapse down for transport and it all fits into a round bag.

There’s two heat zones, a very hot / direct heat area in the center over the burner and a warm / indirect heat area around the edges.  You can fast cook in the center, then push food off to the side to keep warm while you cook other things.  It makes it super easy to cook a whole meal without dirtying up a whole mess of pans and letting things get cold while others cook.  Cleanup is simple, too.  Just scrape it off, wipe it down, and rub a light coat of oil over it when you’re done.

You can even set up a steam tray in the center and pour water on the disc to do steamed buns or dumplings or veggies!  It’s extremely versatile.  Only thing it can’t do is boil water.  So if you want coffee or tea or hot chocolate, you’ve got to carry a small burner for that too (or take the burner off the bottom of the skottle and use that).
