Artswalk at Community Print is happening on Friday, April 24th from 5:30-9pm.
Come join us for a short performance of readings by Sarah Tavis and Maddox Pratt combined with letterpress-on-16mm-film loops direct animation by Devon Damonte and Ruth Hayes. (the film in this post was created by Catherine Michaelis of May Day Press, who can’t be with us this time but shared her beautiful film with us). This will be performed against the wacky mirrored backdrop in the historic Ward Building at 317 4th Avenue East, right between Jake's and the Gyro Spot. Number 30 on the Artswalk map! Sarah will be reading Inoculation, a non-linear, lyrical short story that follows a relationship between a young woman from Texas and a young man from Niger. It examines how cultural pressures lead to the dissolution of their relationship. The readings/screenings will be followed by some drunk tarot readings by Sarah Keliher. There will be a hands on letterpress activity in our shop happening concurrently with all of these other events. And of course, there will be letterpress prints for viewing and purchase from Kelsey Smith, Themba Lewis, Maddox Pratt, Genemichael Lauria, and one wall featuring a 20 year retrospective of Community Print. Readings and screenings will be happening at 7pm, we'll be open for hangouts, high fives, and print viewing from 5:30-9 (or whenever people stop coming in.

Direct animation experiment: I created this first film by experimenting with scratching and dying a recycled super 8 film of the Harlem Globetrotters. I have outlined the steps below:
1. Cut the film into strips 2. Tape strips to butcher paper 3. Colour and scratch film strips (materials: ink, permanent marker, x-acto knife, sandpaper, etc.) 4. Splice filmstrips together 5. Wind film onto take-up real and project for results
While this was only an experiment, I was quite pleased with the results. I found the brightness of the colors and patterns reinvigorated the old b/w film with the notion of spectacle involved in the source material. I plan to film a digital recording of the full projection to post online and will upload a link to the video upon its completion.
