Oakstar is now at 2 lives! There was a mix-up somewhere in my original notes that had her full dying like two lives too early somehow which is (partially) why she’s had such an awful year lol. I was talking to JJ (@heavensgaze) and kind of figured out what her lives ended up being - what attribute she lost each time and who gave it to her originally.
When she was killed by Eve the first time she lost her life for mercy (joydrift), then the three times she drowned she lost her sympathy (brackenleaf), her nerve/persistance (tempest) and her faith in others (marrowtooth). When she died of yellowcough she lost her determination (tuliptail), so when she got to Eve part 2 all she had left were devotion to her clanmates (heavydrop), clear judgement (antsting), and hope (mintpaw). Unfortunately... I think getting struck by lightning took Mintpaw's life from her. All she has left are her judgement and devotion, and something tells me devotion will be her very last life…

Sunwillow and Brownwhisper's relationship is so interesting to me, Sun is so calm but in a mysterious and slightly shady way that really made me invested in where he was headed.

He is such an interesting character, I think the way you tied in some pretty wack rng to make a haunting and compelling story is masterful. I also love how self-assured he is that he is doing the right thing, being the patron of both sacrifice and poison is a great dichotomy.

How do the life attributes work in your worldbuilding? If, say, a cat gets a life for sympathy, does that give them an enhanced capacity for it or something that they then lose if they lose the life? Or if they lose the life do they just lose the ability to feel sympathy altogether?
I think the lives enhance those abilities! I’m a fan of the idea that a leader must die in order to receive their nine lives (moonkitti has a fun video about leader lives that introduced me to the idea) so I imagine the old life is stripped away but the new lives are built on top of that base - so the personality and look is perserved but the new version is a more focused and sharper image than before, if that makes sense. Almost like a fae creature or something. So in her original life, Oakspider was a little bit determined. When she received that life for determination from Tulip, that aspect of her personality was enhanced and brought forward. When she lost that life, though, all that was left of her determination was a pale copy of what she had originally. So there is some overall loss, but it doesn’t leave her totally without that trait. I looove leaders being supernatural creatures, not entirely cats anymore. Oakspider could never have done these things. But Oakstar can, because she has to.
