One day, you notice that Din's cape and the tunic he wears beneath his beskar are torn. He's wearing his spare ones at the moment, the torn ones dirty and in need of a wash. Once the child has been put down to sleep and you are waiting for Din, you set to work and stitch them back together. Even when they are freshly laundered, they have that inherent Din smell that you love. Din walks in on you smelling his newly cleaned and repaired clothes, a small bit of him when he can't be there in person.
Din had told you this hunt was going to be long, much longer than the usual, and that left you to treasure every last piece of him you could get in his absence. His comforting scent always faded from your shared bed after the first two nights, so when youâre going on the third, youâre already eagerly starting to seek something else out. Thatâs when you come across the torn cape and tunic, left in a heap somewhere as if Din meant to come back to it later.
You make it your job, now.
Any moment you have to yourself while Dinâs gone, you set to work. You patch up the holes in the ways your mother had taught you when you were young, not caring if you accidentally prick yourself because you can only think about how youâre helping Din, providing him with more of what he needs. Just holding the fabric in your hands makes your heart swellâhaving this small piece of him makes his absence that much more bearable.
Youâre going on night five alone when you finally finish sewing and you clean the fabric, pleased when youâve thoroughly washed it and it continues to smell like him. It makes your eyes water a bit upon returning to your shared bed, your chest aching for him as you hold the cape and tunic close to you. In fact, it makes you a bit bold, and you dare to exchange whatever youâre wearing for his tunic just to have it envelope you. That night, you use the cape as a blanket, needing to completely drown yourself in whatever you can to ease your aching heart.
Thatâs when Din comes home to the Crest, making sure he remains quiet because heâs certain youâre asleep. When he finds you in your shared compartment, laying on your bed in his tunic and covered in his capeâboth freshly sewn and washedâDin can feel his own heart soar and yearn for you, in the same strong way it has even since he left the Crest for this hunt. He always knew you meant a lot to each other, but to see this right in front of his eyes, after days of missing you with a pain deeper than any wound heâs received, it makes him nearly fall to his knees in relief of seeing you again.
So, even when he manages to lay himself beside you and wrap an arm around your waist to pull your back into his chest, he urges you to Sleep, cyarâika when you stirâbecause the embraces and kisses he knows youâll adorn him with can wait until the morning. For now, he just needs to hold you, to dream beside you and know that his presence alone will bring you the comfort youâve been longing for.
