Two thoughts about trans rights in the u.s. rn:Β
1. If you are not with us you are inherently against us; solidarity from allies is the only means by which trans people will retain any rights or protections during this time. It is not enough that we protect each other- systemic oppression keeps us from those critical places where actionable decisions are being made right now to value or devalue our lives; not every DEI initiative at every organization has a trans person on the board, not every state has a trans rep in office, and so forth.Β From orgs that are under pressure to repeal affirmative action, to doctors who are under pressure to repeal our care: cis allies need to show up and show out for us if we are going to survive.Β
2. All of this has been done before: Though federal protections for trans people were a legitimate victory, their repeal comes as no surprise, and trans communities have survived without legal protections for decades.
The way I see it: we were never reliant on the government in the first place, so this isn't exactly a letdown. Its a return to a status quo where collective organizing in queer and trans communities is essential for our survival. π« <3
