By soldering additional copper strips to the existing pickups for wiring the decoder, insulating the motor block from the pickups/decoder and then using Inobu’s method to hook up the decoder output to the motor block rather than directly to the motor. I always try to make my DCC conversions as unintrusive as possible, so I think using this approach helps achieve that aim fairly well.

I’ve recently finished my DCC conversion of Kato’s M250 Super Rail Cargo freight EMU. I decided to modify Kato FL12 decoders for the cab lighting, soldering LED lights and copper strip to the decoders so that they are a straight swap for the normal DC lightboards and can easily be reverted back to the original lightboards for use with DC again. This video shows testing of the conversion at both ends of the train. I’ve started writing up a guide to the conversion and hope to share it soon!
