2012 K-Pop Newcomer Award Nominees Announced
Recently, the K-Pop 2012 Newcomer Award nominees were announced to us netizens, setting forums ablaze with mini-debates about who should win, and who shouldn't get the award. There were many possible candidates, and from the long list of rookies that debuted this year, three nominees were chosen: solo singer from "Heaven" --Ailee, the aliens with "Power" from Planet Mato -- B.A.P., and the group always making "History" -- EXO.
Now, it would be easy to go on for hours and hours about who deserves to win the Rookie of the Year Award (Newcomer Award), but judging from a swift glance at the discussions currently happening across the net among us K-Pop lovers -- one of the biggest points of conversation isn't about who was nominated or about who should win, but a lot of people are talking about why some of their favorite newbies were overlooked.
So, instead of talking about how we prefer one group over another, let's have our own (fake) awards:
"2012 We Love K-Pop Rookies" Awards (hosted by Americano K-Pop Fan)
(pic source: allkpop.com)
"Best #Shipping of a Musician and a Tree" Award
Winner: Busker Busker
The trio Busker Busker gives us a calming dose of mellow in their music video for "Cherry Blossom Ending." Be sure to watch the video for why they win "Best #Shipping of a Musician and a Tree Award." Additional award to the V.W. Microbus that the band members travel in to reach the object of their desire.

Next Award...

"Best Performance in a Creepy High School" Award
Winner: Nu'est
Is the set in Nu'est's video for "Face" -- designed to look like a school -- haunted? Possibly. Do shady things go down there? Likely. Are the five members of Nu'est going to take back this school from bullies? Most definitely. Judging from the English translation of the lyrics, this song is actually quite positive. If you don't pay attention to the video, you might miss the message, and it's uplifting that this video is about something other than romantic love, spurned love, or unrequited love. Plus, who wouldn't want these gentlemen to be hall monitors at their school? Additional awards for Ren's colorful shoes, and JR's pink hardcore studded gloves.
[Upon searching for Nu'est photos, a majority of them were of Ren, and the number one, most popular, related search was for pics of him. Maknae love, huh, fans? I see what you did there :)]
For our third award...

"Best Use of Tetris in a Music Video" Award
Winner: VIXX
First off, where is this "VIXX Arcade" (as shown in the "Rock Ur Body" video) where you can come in alone, and leave with a boy band? Also, why did that girl enter that empty arcade without bringing her own quarters? An even more important question: what is the game 'Time Crisis,' and why is there a picture of a cone of vanilla ice cream on the side of its machine? Honestly, though, all kidding aside -- this is a fun, colorful video, and an upbeat song.
Along with many other K-Pop stars, VIXX will be appearing at KCON 2012 in Los Angeles on October 13th.
[But if all I have to do in order to meet VIXX is play an arcade game, then I'll be seeing them at Chuck E. Cheese later this afternoon. I have my own quarters!]
Fourth award...

"Best Wedding Crashers" Award
Winner: BTOB
Let's begin by stating one thing: these music video relationships are causing too much sadness for poor Minhyuk -- he sheds tears in both "Irresistible Lips" and "Insane." No more tears, Minhyuk! If a girl goes to her own wedding in a gloomy black dress, then she's probably not exactly thrilled about who's she's marrying -- so stop running in slow motion, catch your breath, and get a taxi to the church, because that chick loves you and only you. Also, ladies, if a guy sets an antique piano on fire (like in the "Insane" music video), then probably, you really have broken his heart into itty bitty pieces. Please, make amends before he sets his gigantic pile of overdue library books alight, too.
BTOB also takes home the award for "Best Renovated Mansion" because the wrecked set for "Insane" looks a lot like the shiny new set for "Wow." I'm starting to expect chandeliers in BTOB videos from now on.
[Some people are saying that BTOB's live performances aren't impressive, but personally, I adore "Wow," the dance for it, and yes, I also heart leader Eunkwang.]
Our fifth award...
"Best Booty-Shaking in a Crowded Hallway" Award
Winner: JJ Project
There seems to be a trend in K-Pop videos set in schools: one of the first acts of rebellion is throwing loose leaf paper i.e. your classwork into the air (remember Bang Yong Guk and Zelo in the music video for "Never Give Up" or Big Bang's "LaLaLa" video). The duo of JJ Project combine rap, rock, and the best dancing high school basketball team I've ever seen in their music video for "Bounce." It will be exciting to see what these two do next during their comeback, and they kind of make you wonder if duos (not just subunits) are becoming the next big thing in K-Pop music. Regardless, be sure to check out "Bounce," and someone, please get those poor cheerleaders some sneakers with arch support -- I don't think it's healthy to cheer in heels, even if they're stylish. Additional award to the man playing their teacher: how boring can he be if he has a sign that says "Come On Bounce. Let it Bounce, Bounce" hanging up in his classroom?
Our Final Awards:

"Best Floating Head(s) in a Music Video" Award -- Ailee for "Heaven"
Additional award to the actor playing Ailee's dad/ex-boyfriend/whomever he was: the "I Don't Trust This Guy...Oh, Wait, It's Kikwang from Beast...Okay, I Trust Him Now...Maybe" Award (based on the older actor's expression when the sir from B2ST walked through the door)
[Honestly, Ailee's voice is magical and "Heaven" is a nice song.]
(pic source: Elle Girl)
"Use of Addictive Word that isn't a Word" Award: B.A.P. wins this for incorporating "digidigidum" into "Warrior." You know it's well-known when you type it incorrectly into the search bar, and Google gives you the right spelling. Yes, even Google knows digidigidum.
Additional award: The "He's How Young? Really? Can I Still Call Him Sexy or is that Wrong?" Award goes to Jongup -- breaking noonas' hearts every time he dances.
[For the record, B.A.P. is a really interesting group to watch. They have a flair for the original and their team dynamics make us want to know more.]
(pic source: High Cut)
"What Happens During a Solar Eclipse" Award: EXO wins this. Our teachers haven't told us the truth: if you watch a solar eclipse, your eyes are damaged -- not by the intensity of the sun, but because EXO appears, and their attractiveness is too much for your eyes.
Additional Award: "Dancing by Himself" Award goes to Kai and Sehun. I don't know what they're selling in the "What is Love" music video -- whether it's dinner jackets, hats, or chairs -- whatever it is, send me the catalog, and I'll buy it all.
[Personally, I enjoyed "History" the most out of EXO's videos, but "What is Love" is growing on me -- even though "What is Love" came before "History."]
In conclusion, hopefully, K-Pop fans will be peaceful, and continue to support each of the Rookies of 2012 (including the ones not on this list) because they all have talent, and they have the potential to bring us even more great music for the rest of the year -- and in years to come.
