Diggersaurs by Michael Whaite
Construction trucks and dinosaurs combine to form large, helpful diggersaurs!
This book helps build:
Phonological Awareness – Being able to hear and play with the smaller sounds in words. The rhyming text and onomatopoeia (words that describe sounds) contribute to your child's phonological awareness, an important skill for learning how to read.
Print Awareness – Noticing print and knowing how to follow words on a page. In Diggersaurs, the print is large and the sound words are in bold letters and often drawn out.
While you read, help kids practice:
Reading – Each diggersaur makes a sound. While reading the book, run your fingers under the bold, drawn out sound words as you say them. Have fun emphasizing the sounds and have your child repeat them after you.
Talking – Talk with your child about what is happening on each two-page spread. Don't forget to note the tiny construction workers in the illustrations and their conversations.
Extend the bookwith a shape diggersaur!
Use this template to cut out the shapes for your diggersaur. You will need to cut three of the circles and eight of the small triangles.
Glue the oblong piece towards the bottom of your paper and glue the large rectangle sitting on top of it.
Glue the three circles to the middle of the oblong piece.
Overlap the two longest triangles for the “neck” and and two other long triangles for the “tail.”
Glue the head pieces (larger square with zig-zag middle) to the end of the neck and the small square to the end of the tail.
Glue small triangles along neck and tail.
Complete your diggersaur with eyes and nostrils.
