makes me sad when people throw the wheelers' actual family dynamic out in order to recast it as abusive. not just because it does a disservice to the actual abusive family dynamics portrayed in the show, but because the wheeler family is compelling in it's own right! it's the everyday tragedy of thousands of americans! it's comfort and safety and smothering, it's privilege and alienation, it's small town and small minded and good intentions gone to seed! it's the basis for not only a lot of the 80s kid sci-fi movies that stranger things plays with (e.t. etc.) but also some of the best american literature there is and i promise you it is as complicated and interesting as any other narrative you want to impose on it
