A few years later, on a visit to the AGO in Toronto, I could feel from 40 feet away that this small, solitary bronze relief sculpture under glass was made by Käthe Kollwitz. A force-like pull towards it from the depths of my being along with an instantaneous welling of tears in my eyes told me it was her work.. it had to be, for no other artist’s works have had such affect of an intense, inexplicable and immediate bodily reaction. As I slowly approached this sculpture, blurry-eyed, trembling, with every hair standing on end, that it was a work by Kollwitz and hers alone was confirmed.
