okay so this is the hot take that absolutely no one asked for but i have to write anyway: the dates in what we do in the shadows (tv) make absolutely no sense. there’s some light spoilers for season two in here, btw. so, here are the canon pieces of evidence:
- nandor was born in 1262 (s1e8)
- according to her ghost, nadja was turned 700 years ago (s2e2)
- nandor raided her village 200 years before she was born (s2e5)
we already have a problem. if nandor was born in 1262 and nadja was turned in 1320ish (assuming she was about 35, she’d have been born in 1285) there’s no way he could have raided her village 200 years before she was born. five years before she was born? for sure. so either her ghost was wrong about how long she’s been dead, or she’s wrong about how long before she was born nandor raided her village. watsonian explanation says her and her ghost are both really bad at math. doyalist says, their continuity editor fucked up.
- almost all evidence: (clothes, accent, personality, behind the scenes interviews) point to laszlo being turned into a vampire at about the victorian era. granted, it was a big part of the 1800s, but it was only from 1837-1901.
- laszlo claims to have killed gregor in almost every lifetime he’s been with nadja. well, from nadja’s testimony, we know she was with gregor at least a few lifetimes before she met laszlo, but she seems to have been with him... like... a lot. in s2e2 she says “hundreds of thousands of times,” but it’s safe to say that’s an exaggeration. assuming laszlo was turned as an adult in the victorian era, he could have killed gregor about six times at most, again assuming gregor lived short lives (~30 yrs) and no time passed in between those lives.
- laszlo confirms only five examples of beheading gregor (s1e10) but after those examples he also says “i could do this all night” implying that he has in fact, killed him many more times.
- additionally, in s2e8, nadja claims that laszlo deciding to go down on her in 1925 was the first original idea he’s had in 200 years. this would indicate that they got together in 1725(ish) and not the victorian era
watsonian explanation: again, you can say nadja is bad at math, the 200 years have to be an exaggeration, etc, but another is that laszlo just.... wasn’t turned in the victorian era, despite the cast seemingly to believe that that’s true. he could have just really liked the aesthetic. doyalist? it’s the continuity person again.
and while i’m here, declaring war on their continuity person, i have one final gripe: nandor says in s2e2 he can’t speak his native langue but not even two eps later he opens a letter in that language and reads and understands it perfectly like. what’s goin on here.
