People have been talking about today’s video for like two weeks and now that it’s finally out and I watched it I feel like I can finally give my opinion on the whole thing. I was not particularly a fan of the 2016 memes video but I did love the first one. So unlike a lot of people (that were convinced that it was going to be either the best or the worst daniel howell video of the year) I don’t think I had any preconcived ideas.
now, at first I was worried that there weren’t enough memes to make a video, but after seeing all the things dan was taking submissions for I realized that there were a lot of thing that I didn’t have in mind. But even if there were more memes than what I remember I do think the video was unnecesarily long. Some things were just so extra (like the pizza laptop thing?) and some of the things in there were not even really memes? like the curls and the wholesome howell stuff.... I think these cause two problems:
1. A general feeling of uuuh? from people than consider theselves to be an active part of the phandom. It just made it seem like the gap between us and dan is a little too big
2. less time for actual good memes like the polling station and the donut
It’s also kind of weird to see dan act in such a dinof persona ™ after gaimingmas and the liveshows. Just admit you’re actually soft and wholesome you nerd?!??! I’m just very amazed by how different gaming dan, liveshow dan, and main channel dan are. I just kind of felt like dan was going out of his way to perpetuate the total edge lord daniel howell brand (that i actually love, this just seemed a bit to forced)
Now some things I did like about the video!
1. that he dragged us because we all deserve it
2. the shade toward shane and marcus cause like same
3. dan saying that the lady door meme was about phil and yet trying to make it about himself
4. saying how proud he is for daniel and depression (i’m proud too)
5. defending colin’s name because he is a good boy
6. It was not so much of a reaction video and more of a dan using memes as an excuse to ramble about what a great year he (they) had
