Sheâs been standing there at least for five minutes.
âWhat exactly are you doing, if I may ask..? Thatâs a rather large bucket of.. Ink, I imagine?â
how do you look at steve wanting to save bucky in the winter soldier? did he want to do it purely because bucky is his best friend, or was there motivation to do it because bucky is also his last lifeline to steve's old life? he's the only other person, besides peggy at that point, who would remember steve before the ice. basically did he do it out of love for his friend or did he feel lonely? maybe a mix of both?
random headcanon questions âŁÂ always accepting !Â
before i get started i want to say thank you for sending this in, this was a welcomed surprise ! and prior to delving into his reasoning for wanting to save bucky during the winter soldier, i want to go back a little bit.Â
steve rogers does not come from a big family. he was an only child with a father who died when he was too young to retain concrete memories ( the ones he does have arenât the best because his father wasnât an exemplary man as cited from the comics ) and his mother was a nurse who worked extremely hard to ensure they could scrape by. i find it hard to believe steve had very many friends that werenât bucky. kids tend to make fun of people who donât fit into a certain standard and steve didnât.Â
so, his dad is dead, his mom is always working ( and eventually passes due to illness ), and he doesnât fit in with any of his peers. who does that leave? bucky. this is a relationship that has been nurtured and solidified over many years. when bucky fell from the train, everyone that steve held dear to him was gone ( of course, with peggy as the exception although her significance to steve is a whole other story that i could dive into some other time ! ).
yes, there is no doubt that steve felt lonely when he woke from the ice, but that was not a new emotion for him to experience. he had been on his own for awhile. i believe he felt more out of place in this new world and yes, bucky was just about the only thing he had left of that feeling of belonging; of home. this is the same bucky that steve watched fall to his death. the one person that steve failed to save all those decades ago.
and before they were partners in war, they were best friends. bucky stood up for him, supported him, and followed him into a war that he never got to walk back from. you know, there is a certain amount of guilt that he never overcame. yes, it was buckyâs choice to follow steve but his mind works in a way that has him questioning: well, what if i did this differently? what if i didnât do that? what if i changed this? so, when steve discovers that is bucky under the mask, he canât sit back and do nothing. after thoroughly thinking that he lost this person forever, he was not going to pass up the chance to get him back.Â
you see steve lay down his shield as opposed to fighting bucky, you see sam and steve talking about the mission to find him in aou, and we all know how cw goes. i think c.hris e.vans says it best: bucky is that grey area that steve finds himself giving up his black and white mentality for ( the mentality that is basically summed up as this or that: youâre good or bad, youâre with me or against me, youâre a friend or enemy ). he wants to belong somewhere and he always has with bucky so of course he wants to save him and burn all these bridges doing so.Â
