a little morsel of the broseph fic! i first started working on this way back in 2020 and while it took a backseat for a while, i’m finally back to working on it! it’s currently at 12K words and has gone through some changes since i initially posted about it!

fucking FINALLY

ok so! fun fact about red’s dad, aka markus “maroon” cole rus. i made him up around four years ago, WAY back in 2016. initially it was for a friend’s comic but I’ve been adapting him ever since. he has become so much worse as a person since then.

to put it simply, maroon is a horrible person. i am going to say that now. there is nothing redeemable sbout him—he doesn’t have a tragic azula or zuko backstory, there’s no reason to find any semblance of good in him, he doesn’t deserve redemption (nor would he work for it in the first place) like given to characters who did not work such as hordak and the diamonds. maroon is an irredeemable villain. that much is true. in the event that my rewrite becomes more widely known, i simply pray that people will not thirst for him or act as if he is deserving of anything but suffering.

anyways. now that i have that cleared up. let’s talk about maroon.

maroon’s smart—i’ll give him that. he’s a scientist, he definitely has the highest doctorate or whatever that illumonai-b has to offer. but if there’s anything that maroon devotes much of his focus on, it’s research. he is always looking for new information. to use. for experiments, inventions, et cetera. that was always his focus.

who knows what drew magenta to him — i’m not decided on that. maybe it was a situation where they had to. maybe they knew each other when they were younger. but magenta does not love him anymore. i can tell you that.

maroon’s always been fascinated with the mere existence of magic and raw power. sure, illumonai-b has these things, but rarely is there one being with so much. he knew of the possibility of one. but he had no idea if, well, they truly existed.

that is, until red came along. his sole child had the brightest red eyes, and maroon could feel it. he knew. he knew that his kid was a phosphinx (in illumonai-b terminology, that’s a “prime”; like a primary color, per se.) and he wanted to harness that. to maroon, a phosphinx was all red was to him—the fact that it was his son was just a convenience bonus. magenta? she cared for her son. maroon? ...not so much.

all red was was an opportunity to him.

much of his time spent was red was experiments of...various proportions. to test red. to test his powers, to force it to be active. and, further, to try and harness that energy and power for himself. this continued for...a while, despite magenta’s tries to stop it.

red, of course, was far too young to fully...comprehend what his dad was doing to him. that didn’t mean it didn’t hurt, didn’t mean he wasn’t scared. magenta saw this. so she sent him away. maroon was furious that his “subject” was gone, so he threw himself further into his work. and he only got worse.
