"Mother, how was it?", Fenris suddenly asked, although it sounded more like a murmur than a question.
"How was what, my son?", the goddess replied, her eyes still down on the book she was reading. The two were alone in the study, surrounded by numerous books from all over the realms. The goddess and her eldest were often there, sometimes in silence, heads down in their books of choice, sometimes talking for hours on end. Often, they were accompanied by Sigyn. That night, however, was an exception. The God of Constancy was else, most certainly exerting his duties as a warrior or merely training. So Loki and Fenris found themselves alone. It was his chance to talk about certain subjects that were better discussed alone.
"When they binded me with", his voice choked and it took him a moment to add "Gleipnir". By then, Loki had her eyes on him. It was hard for all of them to speak of those times. His sudden interest in it brought back memories Loki prefered to keep away from her mind. "How was it? For you, I mean."
For a moment, she was speechless. How could she explain the sheer pain that their casting out brought upon her? There were no words that could accurately paint that sad picture, of a mother losing her children not to death, but to the fear of men. Her children were not beasts. None of them. She knew of their kind nature, if sometimes they were quite unruly. But so was she, so what granted her the freedom they then lacked? What made her better? She could never answer that. There was no answer, like there were no words.
Finally, after a long sigh, the goddess finally spoke, her voice bearing so much pain and so much regret. "They came up to me, some guards, and told me of the decision of binding you forever, along with throwing your brother into the Midgardian sea and casting your sister to the realm that then took her name". Fenris felt familiar pains around him, even after so many centuries, he could feel it around him, if only for a second. "They told me that Jörmungandr was already in Midgard and that Hela too was out of my reach for eternity, that she then ruled over those who did not die in battle, those who could not go to Valhalla". The goddess' arms went around herself, as she tried to keep herself from breaking down, from crying over the past. "But you were nowhere to be found, that you were probably running around. They asked for my help. Mine! They wanted to give you to them".
Even looking down, the goddess knew of the tears that began showing on her son's eyes. There was a reason why they did not talk about the past. "I said I would never. I said I would stop them, so they held me as they explained nothing could be done. They said that the best warriors were out to find you. I pleaded, I begged them not to take you..."
"They finally found you. I remember it vividly. I heard you howling for help as they tried to take you". She remember it because she was powerless. She could not help them, none of them.Â
"It was the worst day of my life."
