While much of the magic community holds a great amount of respect for Maeve, there is one subject upon which they usually disagree with him: the matter of Curses.
Maeve argues that Curse Spirits are simply tortured souls that need to be relieved of their burdens and insists that there is a way to cure them of their afflictions despite not having found that method.
Most of the magic community believes that Curses are simply incarnations of pure evil, that there is no consciousness aside from a drive to commit their terrible acts.

Maeve first started killing Magi and those related to the Artefact ritual when he was twenty. He was offered to become the vessel for an altered Artefact, however when he learned of the method through which he would gain that power, he declined it. Upon doing so he was strapped down and forced to watch as the group destroyed an Earth Spirit in an unsuccessful ritual. It’s anguished cries drove him mad and the moment he was freed he stole a dagger off one of them and promptly slaughtered everyone present.
Even after he formed the Guardian Council, he still played a role in exterminating Spirit Hunters and Magi who gained their powers through this method rather than through proper contracts.

It’s theorized by Darius that Maeve may have been born to be Tam’ra’s first Priest. While he has no definitive proof of this, he reasons that Maeve displays several attributes that Priests do:
He shares his Spirit’s love of their domain
He has a deep spiritual connection to his Spirit’s domain in that the forest favored him.
Maeve, over time, developed the ability to see magic (though this ability can also be attributed to him spending such a great amount of time around Guardian Spirits and Priests during his time running the Council.)
He is deeply devoted to his Spirit.
He is immune to The Healing Plague (Pestis Paradoxicuum) which is commonly contracted by humans who come in contact with or live near a Spirit’s domain.
And also while having no definitive proof, Darius argues that Tam’ra’s lack of knowledge in regards to how being a Guardian Spirit works is because she was once human and retained her human memories instead of being reborn with a clean slate, though seeing as Balthazaar itself has shown sentience, its possible that the forest chose to let her keep her memories upon her death and subsequent rebirth.

Maeve refers to the creatures on Angora and Excelchaius that can naturally use magic as ‘the fair folk’, however, when confronted with one of them, he takes a stance of extreme respect and reverence, treating them like the highest of royalty or like Gods depending on how powerful they are, though he is on incredibly familiar terms with most of the powerful Spirits and some of the more stable Dae, so he tends to drop the formal speech after they’ve exchanged greetings.

After spending several decades of his life around Spirits and Priests, Maeve eventually became able to See magic the way that they do, however he still wasn’t able to interact with it in any manner until he made his Contract, even after which he could only interact with magic that was stored within the Spirits themselves.
