The Whole Family
âHow are you?â Kate said to a confused-looking elderly woman who might have been related to her.
âShe doesn't speak English,â her uncle said slowly. âShe canât understand you.â
âOh,â Kate said, and looked away. She picked up a piece of celery lying on a tray on the table and chewed it slowly. The television was playing âA Christmas Storyâ for the third time.Â
âIs it snowing outside,â someone said.
âItâs a wintry mix,â someone else said, âbut it might turn to snow later.â
âOh,â the first person said.
The confused-looking elderly woman walked into another room. Kateâs uncle picked up a piece of celery lying on a tray on the table and chewed it slowly.
âItâs nice to have the whole family here for once,â someone said.
âYes,â someone else said, âitâs nice to have the whole family here.â
