#devolution spray

Devolution Spray was originally in the Base Set all the way back in 1999, but wasn’t seen again until Dragons Exalted. This era of the game also got the card in both Fates Collide and Evolutions. The Item let you devolve 1 of your evolved Pokemon, putting the highest Stage Evolution card into your hand. That Pokemon couldn’t evolve during the turn it was played, but it did give a way to activate any sort of Ability that worked when evolving a Pokemon.

There wasn’t much use for it while it was available in any Standard format. There was Raichu from Burning Shadows, which could set Paralysis on the opponent’s Active Pokemon when evolving from Pikachu. Using Devolution Spray could help lock things down for quite a while if the opponent had no way out of it, but you still needed to be making progress since any switching card that wasn’t Float Stone still helped to break that. There was a single good tournament appearance for that sort of deck, with a top 16 finish at an International in London for the BKT-On format, using a bunch of disruptive cards, Heatmor to fetch things out of the discard pile, and things like a Durant and Rainbow Energy to try to mill the deck and Jirachi to stall while getting rid of Special Energy. It was rare enough that you didn’t really prepare much for it, though. If it had been more successful, Devolution Spray would have been a better card, as would yesterday’s Chaos Tower.

This card’s main themes center around turning back, stagnation, and turning away from growth.

The image portion of this card shows the bottle firing off some kind of spray with DNA symbols in the background. Besides the yellow of the bottle (which can indicate imagination, enlightenment, knowledge, intuition, and much, much more), there’s also a gradient of black to red. Black isn’t all dark and dreary, as it can indicate stability, removing negativity, and discovering hidden wisdom. Red, meanwhile, isn’t just desire and passion and sex - it’s motivation, independence, and health among more meanings.

Wisdom is what stuck out to me the most from these colors - the wisdom that you will gain through the winter months, the wisdom that you will need for it and whatever crops up in your life these coming months through to the new year. A new year is new beginnings, but you don’t have to forget everything to start over, no matter what it is that you’re re-doing.

...I have no idea where that came from, I just started typing. It feels like it’s important for you to hear, though, so keep it in mind (even if it sounds crazy).

Like in the previous reading, there’s the note that says you can use as many Item cards as you’d like in the trading card game, which still implies (to me anyway) that there’s more to this reading than can be revealed at the moment.
