An overview of Devlin's backstory & lore! I TRY to keep it brief. 😅 I'll update this post over time and link related stuff. But I wanted to have an all in one place for easy reference. Spoilers ahead for The Dark Urge origin story in BG3. Mature topics throughout may include mentions of sex, violence, pregnancy, cult abuse, and macabre humor.
Bhaal had a sense of humor the day he made Devlin. He combined his flesh with the likeness of a distinguished high elf and the jizz of 500 goblins.
Sceleritas left her at a monastery where she was soon adopted by a high elf couple in the upper city. They enrolled her at a manners school where she knew she was different. Particularly when she smiled and the other kids recoiled at the sight of her razor sharp grin.
She loved the circus and aspired to be a clown. Along with liking clowns she started showing equally disturbing behaviors, like crawling up walls, eating raw meat, crying bloody tears, and rotating her head in a full circle.
Her adoptive parents hired a cleric to perform an exorcism on her. But during the exorcism, Bhaal possessed the young bhaalspawn. He eviscerated both the cleric and the adoptive parents. When Durge came to she fled in horror.
She lived on the streets as a street urchin for a time. Sceleritas Fel eventually offered her a home in the temple.
She trained for years. Though she couldn't escape her rebellious nature. She started having wild sex which temporarily distracted her from her most murderous urges. But to seek escape from the urges was an affront to Bhaal himself.
She developed a propensity for monsterfucking, seeking out bigger, scarier lovers for the thrill and distraction. A more horrifying lover could handle her inner violence, often becoming the victim of her bloody desire.
Among her many partners was a draegloth who got her pregnant.
Her mind fractured during her pregnancy. A bhaalspawn growing in the body of another bhaalspawn created a sort of doubling effect. Meaning both Durge and the child's urges overwhelmed her mind.
She birthed a four-armed bhaalspawn with magenta skin that matched her own. Bhaal quickly stole the child away. For her insubordination, he punished Devlin by stringing her up in a cage for months of public shame within the bhaalist temple.
Sarevok Anchev saw an opportunity of his own, a chance to regain favor in his father’s eyes. Helena was pregnant soon after.
Bhaal kept Durge caged for the duration of Helena's pregnancy. Only Sceleritas was allowed to interact with The Dark Urge.
Bhaal finally offered her a chance of redemption. He instructed her to act as his chosen cleric once again by delivering Helena’s child and becoming the new bhaalspawn's spiritual mentor. She accepted and soon Orin was born into her hands.
From then on, The Dark Urge ruled the temple as a callous mistress. She supported the cult financially through an underground black market trade of organs and limbs, supplying bodies to her clients (mostly necromancers) who paid well for the temples discretion.
She fucked a beholder and got a tattoo to commemorate the experience.
The tally mark tattoos on her right arm are a record of liaisons with “pretty corpses” (of which Astarion eventually joins the ranks!)
Gortash becomes her business partner. He also came up with her name. He had affectionately started calling her a “devilish elf.” That led him to the simple portmanteau of devil and elven: Devlin!
Gortash and Devlin had a sexual relationship with no strings attached. She took full advantage of her cleric powers for creative use with Gortash, often resurrecting him in the bloody aftermath.
Orin grew resentful of Durge's relationship outside of the temple. Orin lobotomized Devlin out of a feeling of abandonment.
Devlin awakens on the nautiloid with no memory of her past life. But she still possesses her cleric powers - implying a divine source. Bhaal hides his influence, instead choosing to send Sceleritas to manipulate the fallen bhaalspawn back into submission.
She has an unmistakable pull to Withers.
She is fuck buddies with Lae’zel at first. Soon after she sleeps with Astarion. Her and Astarion start to actually fall in love during the goblin camp, where they delight in being menaces together. She had an unfortunate night with Gale...but that prompted her to go steady with Astarion.
Following Astarion’s confession, she respected his need for a break from sex. Soon realizing just how much she relied on sex to cope with her own urges.
The urges worsened especially after entering Baldur's Gate, when she was bombarded with the revelations that: A) she's a Bhaalspawn, B) she fucked Gortash, and C) Orin killed her favorite clown.
She slept with Halsin in hopes of taking the edge off. It didn't work. In fact, she felt remorseful, realizing she needed to confront the source of her problem: Bhaal.
Devlin lost her foot in the final showdown with Orin.
She resists her father’s will. She's resurrected by Withers. At that moment Devlin becomes his chosen and he supplies her with her cleric power.
However, he resurrects her without restoring her lost foot. Orin took it to the grave. So, Devlin stitched a found foot and used some necromancy magic to animate it. She replaces it often (though sometimes she lets it go for longer than she should... 💀)
In the events after the game, her and Astarion hitch a ride with the Circus of the Last Days where Devlin studies death magic under Lucretious. They also use the opportunity of traveling to scour all corners of the realms for a way for Astarion to walk in the sun again. In their travels they are confronted with their past. Each hunted by scorned figures seeking revenge, whether it be Astarion’s hundreds of marks or Devlin’s one angry offspring.
Her dream visitor was a halfling gynecologist named Gemini (aka my spouses Tav)
Her four-armed son was raised in a separate temple of Bhaal. His name is Rex! (after Oedipus Rex)
She named her boobs "Minsc & Boo"
