crucially even with horrible memory loss, ruby would still be ruby. she hears lily crying for her and immediately opens her arms. she Knows there's someone out there she needs to help even if it's hell trying to scrape together details. she can't place devin's face without a splitting migraine but when devin tells her that she actually Hasn't done anything wrong, ruby trusts him enough to believe it. etc
this is just because i love the indulgence of an amnesia AU. you guys know i cannot resist Indulgences .
the only time devin ever used her "god makes a command" channel on the fantasy anarchist commune discord - a channel which liddi added as a pointed joke on how devin really is not the "makes a command" type of god - was one night, while she was half-asleep, curled up in a old plant bed in the caverns, curled up in a new position and discovering how comfortable it was. it was a piece of advice, along with an unfinished joke.
she would then sleep for 10 hours, while everyone slowly began to panic. the few people wondering what to do with this new, godly command - taking it seriously - were drowned out by everyone who was deeply concerned about her well being. because, well, What the fuck devin.
by hour 10 - ruby, who had been visiting the temple to help with some paperwork - had been goaded into soothing the populations worries by heading down into the caverns to see devin.
devin wakes up to a hand on her shoulder and the soft glow of a phone light, thankfully pointed away from her. "what..?"
"uhm, some people are worried about your statement."
"what statement?? let me read it."
ruby, after assuring it wont kill devin with a migraine, turns the phone around and holds up devins statement to her.
"everyone fo sideways. i will"
SCREAM.
i'm very fond of imagining a devin and nova baby because there are so many potential ways to fuck that child up. like. just off the top of my head the possible parental conglomerations are:
1) best timeline - baby has earth magic, which means even Evil Blonde Mom has to admit that it's best to be raised in the earth temple with papa. there's even a 90% chance that papa transitions to mama while the kid is still young. bc she wants baby to have a happy primary caregiver and is less prone to Refusing Anything That Feels Good.
2) worse timeline - baby is normal or has light magic, so they're raised by Evil Blonde Mom in the centerspire. papa cohabitates and is technically involved but is tangibly emotionally distant due to being in agony all the time. (0% chance of transition.) baby develops a complex around showing negative emotions thanks to mom and a guilt complex about being alive thanks to papa. great work everyone!
3) better...?? timeline?? - papa kidnaps baby and gives them to Non-Evil Mum, and then Non-Evil Mum flees the country with baby in tow. LOTS of ways this could unfold and lots of issues baby can have, largely predicated on whether or not mum TELLS her she's adopted and also the lost tachnin princess.
4) same timeline - exactly the same as #3 except papa and Non-Evil Mum ALSO have a bio kid. who was born after mum fled the country. so the princess has a half-sibling who's a year or so younger. this half-sibling will definitely not be used as emotional leverage against her by followers of Evil Blonde Mom.
5) worst timeline - papa and Non-Evil Mum both get caught during the whole kidnapping thing and die badly. baby is raised by Evil Blonde Mom as a single parent who's really normal about the new earth god :)

back to thinking about a "ruby kidnaps devin and nova's child to keep it away from the light temple" AU. love to take a good-hearted character and put them in an unconscionable situation because all the alternatives are so awful. imagining ruby having to weigh the risks vs benefits of telling baby about the danger they're in, in terms of like, there are bad people who will hurt you but they're more genetically related to you than i am so i don't know if you'll even believe me. and the risks versus benefits of telling baby any true stories about their mama back in tachni (the one who isn't the devil). and even whether to raise baby as a monolingual oichen speaker under the assumption they'll live at home all their life versus teaching them tachnin just in case the worst happens and they get dragged back and have to understand the cops n lawyers in a foreign country.
from baby's POV you grow up with a mum who's Great and helps you hit all your developmental milestones and holds you when you cry and gives you great life advice and pays attention to you and lets you have a social life n hobbies. but you also become Very attuned to your mum's stress levels, in part Because she tries so hard to hide them, and you eventually realize mum is stressed out of her mind All The Time. she watches the news a lot and sometimes you hear her crying in her bedroom when you're supposed to be asleep. and when you ask her what's wrong she won't tell you anything except maybe that she's missing your mama. and when you ask questions about said mama your mum won't even tell you whether or not she's dead. also your mum gets incredibly tense whenever anyone at school asks questions about your background & she has the two of you pack up and move whenever your teachers get a little Too concerned. and by your early teens you're like um. okay. i'm like 98% sure my mum kidnapped me from my bio parents and we've been on the run my whole life but. it's gonna be reallyyyy awkward to tell her i know that. because. she's nice :(
ruby doing open surgery on a conscious devin because it's unfortunately necessary while devin is like yeah sorry this is gross and for some weird reason feels like sex. vs sol sliding an entire hand into the space between devin's skin and ribcage while devin is like "is thhat your hand oar are u jus happy 2 see me ;)" and sol is like baby that doesn't even make any sense. [gently cracking bone] [grinning as devin screams] you're delirious
i hope there's an AU out there where devin and ruby are having a good day. they definitely aren't in canon, but. Somewhere......
