Kenna
“I don’t understand why we’re forced to stay here, it fucking sucks here!” I hear my baby sister Kal screeching in the palace's hallway.
“Watch your tone with me young lady!” our Grandfather scolds and I roll my eyes because I know my sister and that isn’t as much of a threat as Grandfather would like it to be. I mean for anyone else the tone of his voice or the look in his eyes would send them into a frenzy of fear and tears.
Even the most vicious demons and souls that are trapped down here don’t stand a chance against our Grandfather, which I guess is why he’s the one in charge.
But us? Yeah, not so much. I mean I guess we should be worried when he gets a temper but it’s hard to be worried when the same man — well devil — used to read you bedtime stories. Not the kind mortal children are read, not fun tales of princesses and the princes that save them, no we got read stories about torture and dismemberment. I guess that’s probably where our flexible morality comes from, that and our bloodline.
“I’m not scared of you,” she sneers.
“You should be. I’ll sentence you to purgatory until you’re twelve hundred!” Grandfather yells back, his temper getting the better of him.
“You will send your own granddaughter to purgatory?” Kal huffs. “Okay. Sure.”
I swear I can hear the eye roll in her tone alone.
“Can’t we just go up for All-Hallows-Eve? Come on, it’s a holiday made for witches and demons and we just so happen to be both,” Keres, my middle sister and forever the fixer jumps in. “Plus we can just come back, the upper level demons go back and forth all the time.”
“It’s dangerous in the mortal world,” our Grandfather sighs. “You’re here so I can protect you. I can’t do that if you leave.”
“We literally live in Hell!” I yell through my bedroom door. “What the fuck could we need protecting from in the mortal world that can’t harm us in Hell?”
“Stop eavesdropping!” Kal yells back.
“Stop yelling in my fucking hallway then!”
“Guys!” Keres huffs, and I can just picture her rubbing her temples to try and stave off the impending headache.
I motion my hand and my bedroom door opens to see the three of them in the hallway just outside. My grandfather, the resident underworld devil. My middle sister Keres, and my baby sister Kalypso, or Kal. And they’re all staring at me with varying expressions of confusion on their faces.
“What?” I question from my bed.
“Where did you learn that?” my Grandfather fumes, and I swear if he isn’t careful he’s going to turn bright red just like the little devil cartoons from the mortal world.
I shrug my shoulder. “Just a little trick I picked up.”
“Where?” he demands.
“Just because you’re pissed off that we’re half witch doesn’t mean that changes what we are,” I tell him before casually getting up from my bed. “And I think we’ve been subjected to life in the Underworld long enough. We’ve learned about our demonic half now it’s time we figure out the magical parts.”
“You’re not going anywhere,” Grandfather growls and I watch as his eyes light up with a demonic fire before turning pure black.
“We’ll just see about that now won’t we,” I tell him with a smirk on my face.
We have been forced to remain in the underworld for far too long and frankly I’m sick and tired of having to stay here. As I can see my sisters are as well, so what better time to leave than All-Hallows-Eve which is in just a few days. I’ve spent most of my life trying to figure out the best way to get out of here and never come back. The only reason I have stayed this long is because I didn’t think my sister were willing to leave and I would never have left them here alone.
“Kenna, I swear to Hell if you even think about going up to the mortal world it will be the last thing you do,” Grandfather threatens.
I bring my hand up and tap my chin as if in thought. “Just like if I managed to collect demonic powers it would be the last thing I did?” I ask as I blink my eyes and suddenly appear right behind him, tapping my finger on his shoulder.
“Kenna,” he growls as he turns around. “I warned you.”
“You do that a lot,” Kal muses. “But she never listens.”
“Just like your mother I swear,” Grandfather murmurs under his breath before turning and stalking down the hall away from us.
“Why does he hate our mom so much?” Keres asks as she watches his form disappear behind the false walls of the palace.
“Because mom is a witch, and he hates witches. Which if I had to guess is why he’s so hard on us, we’re half witch and he hates that,” Kal offers.
“I think he’s so hard on us because we take after mom and don’t like to listen to him, ever.”
“Well, I’m sure that’s part of it,” Keres agrees.
“So do we really get to go to the mortal world for All-Hallows-Eve?” Kal asks as she turns to me.
“If we go, you know we probably can’t come back, right?” I question them.
Kal and Keres glance between themselves before turning back to me with devious smiles on their faces. The type of sinister look you can only give when plotting something evil, or completely against the rules. My favorite type of plan.
“Let’s get the fuck out of here,” Kal confirms with a nod of her head.
Since we’re all half demon — specifically the devils daughters — and half badass dark witch I think we’ll be just fine taking on the mortal world.
After all what are a bunch of humans going to do against us? Burn us at the stake? We’re made up of hellfire, I’d love to see them try.
