Janosh & Dry Devil
Devil's Pack Week 2026, Day 1: Friends
This is the first KCD week event I'm taking part, yay! Not sure if I manage to do the whole week prompts, but here is a fic for the first one: friends. Kubyenka's POV, set before the main events of KCD2. Warning for Adder's vulgarity and Kubyenka's PTSD, mature rating to be safe. Also, I'm not a native english speaker, so sorry for grammar mistakes, etc.
Day 1: Friends
Kubyenka should feel good. The Devil's Pack just came back from a big job, their pockets full of silver coins. For the first time in a long - too long - time, they had enough money to drink the best ale and slept in nice, cozy beds in a warm inn instead of freezing in their shitty forest camp. That alone was a good reason to celebrate and they indeed celebrated the lucky fortune already for many days.Â
Kubyenka should have felt good, but he didn't.
His companions, more than thirty hardened men, filled the inn. Some, like Adder, disappeared with a nice girl somewhere deep in the building. Some like Ranyek and Matthew enjoyed the well-seasoned warm food while Janosh argued with the innkeeper over the roasting meat. But most just drank until rolling drunk. They talked and argued, mocked each other and boasted, sang lewd songs, the sound of their voices roared inside Kubyenkaâs head, but none of the words, their meaning, truly reached him.
The inn was too noisy, too stuffy.Â
The more alcohol burned Kubyenka's throat, the harder it was to stay in the present time. To breathe. The heavy smell of blood choked him, even though the battlefield was left behind days ago and Kybyenka washed and washed and washed his skin until its light color became red. Yet it wasn't enough, it never was enough. The blood was on his hands, tainted him to the core of his soul.
Everyone always laughed at him for there was no day Kubyenka stayed sober. A good companion to drink, they said when he amused the crowd. Drunkard, they called him when barely conscious, he was vomiting in the corner. The fucking loser, they mocked when the choked sob broke out of him over the half-finished drink. Like today. But ugly crying Kubyenka was someone people easily forgot about. And so they left him where he sat. Alone.
Such good friends they were, he bitterly thought not for the first time, but did he mean the other members of Devilâs Pack or his past companions, he still had no idea.
All left him alone, one way or another.Â

Kubyenka: money vs caring
When Kubyenka told Henry about his past, he said
"[...] Once I got a taste of money, I chose to stay [in a group of mercenaries]".
and explained that
âOnce they stop paying or you run out of things to steal, itâs best to go and try your luck elsewhere.â
Henry immediately connected it to the reason why Devilâs Pack broke after Hynekâs capture. Kubyenka thought Dry Devil understood the situation because there is no honor between mercenaries (and he even pointed out to Hynek he hired a band of criminals so he should not be surprised they left)
But the thing is - Kubyenka admitted to Henry, he couldnât leave Hynek for certain death.
Kubyenka: I⊠I donât think I could sleep easy if they actually executed that old bastard. Fuck, I know the Devil better than I know my own old man. And he still owes me groschen from our last raid. And I take that seriously!
The care for money here feels like an afterthought, a cover up for letting Henry see how deeply Kybyenka cares. A similar âdonât die, you still own me moneyâ approach comes from Janosh worrying about bleeding Adder (who turns it into his typical insult-joke to lighten the mood)
Janosh: Come on! You still owe me fifty groschen! You know how many fucks that would buy? Adder: Three⊠with your Ma. Hehe.
Then we have Ransom Quest, in which Henry could recruit Kubuenka and Adder as his (and Jan of Suchotlesky)âs backup.Â
Kubyenka: Really? Let's hear it then. Henry: Iâm in a sticky situation, and I need a few men in case things get out of hand. Kubyenka: Could you go into a little detail? Henry: A slimy Hungarian baron is trying to fleece a young Czech nobleman out of money. And heâs looking for men to stop the Hungarian bastard. So you sprang to mind. Kubyenka: And this young lord⊠He will pay us? Henry: If we save his neck, he better damn well. Kubyenka: Say no more! Whose faces are we going to be smashing? Henry: Maybe it wonât be necessary in the end. But if the going gets tough, there can be no hesitation, is that clear? Kubyenka: Clear as day. So where will this little dance be happening? Henry: Wait for us by the mill on top of the hill between Horschan and Miskowitz. Kubyenka: Your wish is my command! Iâll get Adder and weâll head out immediately.
When Henry came to Kubyenka, the man asked if he and Adder would get paid for their assistance. All Kubuenka needed was Henryâs statement âIf we save his neck, he better damn wellâ, which in itself, is not an actual assurance nor a specific price for which Kubyenka (and Adder) will risk their life. There is no real haggling or setting conditions - something we would expect from an experienced mercenary. And it is very telling that Henry was so sure that Kubyenka and Adder would definitely help him and he knew these men for what? A few days, maybe a few weeks at best.Â
So like, money are Kubuenkaâs concern for he wonât risk his life for nothing - which is a fair mindset, but at the same time, Kubyenka agrees to help solely on vague assumption Jan of Suchotlesky will pay well (or at all), as only Henry met the man and Kubyenka is relying on Henryâs trust put in the young nobleman.
Alternatively, Kubyenka is trusting Henry that he will enforce on Jan of Suchotlesky the promised payment. One way or another, Kubyenka did not state the acceptable price (and we have no idea why Adder agreed, as Kubyenka recruited Pole offscreen. Did Adder agree because of money? For the fun of killing people? Just because Kubyenka and Henry asked?)
Then we have Exodus Quest, in which Henry, Samuel, John of Liechtenstein and Rabbi Jehuda joined forces to save Jewish people living in Kuttenberg from pogrom ordered by Markvart von Aulitz.
Kubyenka arrived at Raborsch after the enemy's brutal attack, he had no idea what was happening (nor if Dry Devil and Zizka were fine). All Henry told him is âThe real massacre is yet to come if we donât do something fast. We have to get to Kuttenberg!â. Henry did not ask Kubyenka for joining them - most likely as Dry Devil already refused (though the main motive behind the refusal was his serious injury) and there was no money to offer. He asked Kubyenka only âCan we borrow the wagon you arrived on?â to which Kubyenka of course agreed.Â
In the following dialogue, it is Rabbi Jehuda who actually asked Kubyenka for help:
Henry: Can we borrow the wagon you arrived on? Kubyenka: But of course. I âborrowedâ it too, if you know what I mean. But⊠Samuel: Could you stop blabbering already? We donât have the time! Rabbi Jehuda: Easy, yingele! And you, Sir, if you can, come with us and help us. Kubyenka: Alright, but could you please tell me what the fuck is going on?
Kubyenka agreed to join the little group before anyone explained to him the gravity of the situation and that they will face actual soldiers in fight and not some random people who decided on whim to raid Jewish Quarter. And Kubyenka agreed, asked by a man he met a few minutes ago (with angry Samuel at the Rabbiâs side) AND despite his own religious bias (âYou killed our SaviourâŠâ).
During the Siege of Suchdol, Kubyenka wasn't happy about losing silver (as could be seen when he and Janosh chitchatted together) but he was more focused on being still alive and missing Adder than at the actual lost of money.
Kubyenka: Are you alright, Janosh? Janosh: One skinny piece! I am like stick! Kubyenka: Better being thin than cold. Janosh: I am not so sure right now. Kubyenka: Don't talk bollocks. Janosh: Depends how you look. In next life I will have all my wishes. For me that mean I stuff my face for eternity! Kubyenka: If we hadn't lost the fucking silver, you could have feasted like that while still breathing. Janosh: PiÄa, do not even talk to me about no silver. We almost die, and for what? Fuck all. Kubyenka: That's more than Adder's got.
Kubyenka wasnât also as stubborn about keeping the silver the way Dry Devil, Janosh and Samuel were, as each of mentioned men refused to give it away to negotiate with enemy.
(Samuel due to hatred for Markvart von Aulitz, so the silver won't go to a man responsible for murder of his people. Janosh, as we may assume, because Adder's died during the Italian Court Heist arc. Hynek's reasoning is not stated, so it may vary from personal reasons (again Adder) to political ones (serving king Wenceslav).
Peter of Pisek: I'll say it again! We must negotiate with the Praguers! Dry Devil: Of course! I'd be glad to shoot another one! Peter of Pisek: If I were you, I'd keep my mouth shut, Hynek. After all, we're in this mess thanks to you? Dry Devil: Thanks to me?! Kubyenka: What got us into this mess is that we're fighting against that ginger bastard, and that we stole his treasure and are hiding it in the cellar. Peter of Pisek: So, everything could be solved if we just.... Janosh: Only over my dead body! Peter of Pisek: You'd rather die than... Janosh: I rather die. Samuel: I also have no intention of paying the bastards who burnt down my neighbourhood.
It feels like the issue of money was always lurking in Kubyenka's mind but it was not his major motivation, especially not the way it was for characters like Brabant. Kubyenka does care for his companions (an occasionally about innocent people harmed by war/political struggle between noblemen) beyond the material gain, what was especially seen with Dry Devil and aiding Henry and Jewish people when asked for help.
another subtle aside that i love: the (original) devil's pack are so clearly the protagonists of a novel that we missed. there were nine of them (maybe more, but nine named, i think)âhynek, kubyenka, janosh, adder, matthew, ranyek, bohuta and slavek, loudyilâand now there are four, washed up in a roadside dive. we get bits and pieces of some of their adventures, but it's over now, half-remembered or vaguely debated over dice and liquor. they're old men or aging, out here past the end of their story. this is the epilogue. until.
Finally drawn Janosh and so I finished Devil's Pack portraits before New Year! Yay! Last work before 2026 begins!
