Hawkins, Indiana is a stark difference from the world you knew before. Born to lawyers in New York, you were always surrounded by parties, kids who knew way too much for their age, and so much etiquette that you knew the right way to place your hands while talking to someone.
You loved your life, to you, it was perfect.
That was until your parents decided to move to Hawkins for work. You protested of course, begging to stay in New York and that youâll do whatever it takes to stay in New York.
However much to your despair, you moved to Hawkins, abandoning your private school for Hawkins High. Needless to say, you werenât happy with anyone.
It was your first day, and you were being driven to school, wearing some of your best clothes, checking your eyeliner in your compact mirror as you arrived at your new school.
You sigh, hesitantly getting out of your car and walking inside. You feel a bit uneasy, seeing a variety of styles of clothing walk by you, people staring at you and whispering. You tried to be nice, waving hello and smiling to the people who passed by you, but you were always glanced at.
You eventually did meet a group of friends, but you didnât inherently enjoy them. Always wanting to go out with you to expensive places and expecting you to pay, and while you did enjoy the smallest part of the life you knew, going back to fancy dinners and high end shops, but you knew they were using you for your money. But you didn't have any other friends to talk to, and your parents were always too busy to ask advice, so you sucked it up and continued hanging out with them.
You accepted the routine, living with it until your parents decided to sign you up for after school clubs, wanting you to be âwell rounded for collegeâ
You had joined a âvideo game and technologyâ club to bolster your knowledge about the new scene of video games so you had a new perspective on art.
You walked in, five minutes early as always, yet to your surprise, the class was almost full, which shocked you a bit, you never were in a club that was entirely full.
You walk around, trying to find an empty seat before finding one next to a boy wearing a cap and curly brown hair.
âIs this seat taken?â You ask, holding onto the back of the seat gently just as you were taught.
âWhat? Oh no its open take itâ The boy smiles, turning his attention back to his book.
You smile and take the chair, sitting upright next to him as you wait for the teacher to begin.
The instructions begin, you keeping the same interested face you were taught to keep as you don't pay attention to whatever the teacher is saying.
âAll right and pair upâ you hear the teacher say, snapping you out of your thoughts. You look around, trying to see if you can spot anyone to pair up with. You don't and sigh, grabbing your bag and getting ready to leave. You were just going to join a different art club, no matter what your parents said.
âDo you need a partner?â You hear a boy ask. You turn around and see the same boy you sat next to looking at you.
âOh, uh, I'm okay thank you for asking, however I was just about to leaveâ You say, offering him a small smile as you turn to leave,
âOh come on, I'm president of this club, I promise you'll like it, just stay for the day, all right? I'm Dustin by the wayâ He smiles, extending his hand out for you to shake.
âCharmedâ you say, shaking his hand, reluctantly going back with him to the desks you were at before.
He brings out a computer, plugging it in and waiting for it to finish booting up.
âI didn't know this school carried computersâ You whisper, watching him plug in the needed cables.
âYeah, our club put on a fundraiser to buy some computers, we managed to get enough for the club, plus now we also get to have a computer lab now which is coolâ Dustin explains, looking proud at the computer as you feel yourself smiling.
âIâm guessing you're not from here huh? We made the news a year ago when this happened, all of Hawkins knows about itâ
You sigh and offer him another smile, âNo, I'm originally from New York, my parents brought me here since they got a job offer and felt like downsizing a bitâ You explain, watching the loading screen,
âNew York? That makes sense, I was wondering why you had on expensive clothes for school. But that's cool, you like it here?â Dustin asks, cheering a bit when he sees the computer fully booted up, making you smile again
âI havenât really explored the town, Iâve mostly been going to the next town over with people from hereâ You explain, watching Dustin as he tries to find the program he wants,
âWhat? No way dude, you need to check out Hawkins, have you been to the arcade? Youâd love the arcade, I have the highest score on Dig Dug, if you don't look at Maxâs scoreâ Dustin sighs, but still concentrating on his computer.
âI don't really have a big interest in video games, but I appreciate your suggestionâ You smile, trying to be polite,
âWell that's just because you haven't tried any good onesâ Dustin beams, moving aside as you stare at the computer screen, seeing a game called âfight simulatorâ on screen,
âItâs a two player game, you want to try?â Dustin asks,
You smile and nod, being courteous, "I'll tryâ you say, placing your hands on the keyboard.
Did you understand the game at all? Not really, but you had fun. You spent the next hour laughing with Dustin, abandoning the manners you were supposed to always show as you continued laughing with him.
As the clubâs time finally runs out, Dustin is left putting back the computers as you watch, waiting for your driver to appear. He was almost never late, and you knew your parents were going to throw a fit over it.
âSo, how did you like video game clubs?â Dustin asks as he puts away the last computer,
âIt was very fun, thank you for making me stayâ you giggle,
âOf course, I can tell you had fun, you stopped with your manners the longer you playedâ Dustin teases, sitting next to you.
You feel your face heat up, now knowing what happened as you played, "I'm so sorry that wasn't supposed to happenâ you say, putting your face into your hands.
âNo it's fine dude, you were enjoying it, and that's cool. I'm going to the arcade in a few days, maybe youâd want to come with me?â Dustin asks, his ears just a tad pink,
âYeah Iâd love to, is twenty dollars enough?â You ask, fishing into your bag for a bill,
âWoah woah woah, that's way too much, just bring a handful of quarters, all right?â Dustin asks, laughing a bit,
âOh, okay, I can bring quartersâ You finally, hearing the honk of your car, âOkay, my driver is here, I'll see you in a few days then?â You ask,
âDriver? What the-okay yeah I'll see you thenâ Dustin smiles, waving as you walk away.
After a few days, it was finally time for the arcade, and you had a bag of quarters in your backpack. You get dropped off at the entrance by your driver, seeing the neon lighted interior and smells of food, syrups, and children fill your senses. Youâve never seen anything like it back in New York, but you were intrigued
âHey you're here earlyâ Dustin smiles, locking his bike as he runs up to you,
âI was only five minutes earlyâ you smile
âAre you sure you want to wear that?â Dustin asks, staring at your clothes,
âSorry?â You ask, a bit of annoyance in your voice,
âNo, not like that! I just mean that there's a lot of stuff in there, and your clothes are like super expensive, I just don't want you to stain them that's allâ Dustin says quickly, his face now red,
âOh, I didn't think about thatâ you say, staring down at your Christian Lacroix pants and Krizia shirt, now realizing just how painfully overdressed you were
âItâs fine, hereâ Dustin says, taking off his sweater and handing it to you, âItâll keep your stuff safeâ he smiles
âOh, thank youâ you say, putting it on. You could feel the difference in material, something that your parents would never want you to put on, but it was soft, gentle, you loved it.
âNo problem, now lets goâ Dustin laughs, running inside, you close behind.
Dustin practically gives you a tour, walking you through all the games you could play and giving you a demonstration for each one. You smile watching Dustin run you through all the video games, you werenât as good as him, but he cheered you on every time you tried a new game, telling you how great your attempt was.
By the end, Dustin had run out of quarters, and you were fishing around your bag for a ten dollar bill to give him. As a thank you or for quarters you werenât really sure.
âWoah I dont want your moneyâ Dustin says, laughing a bit
âWhat? Itâs a giftâ you say, trying to hand him the bill,
âLook I appreciate it, but I brought you here because the arcade is great and I knew youâd like it, not for you to pay meâ He chuckles.
You put the bill away, confused, but smiling at him,
âOkay, thank you by the way, for bringing me here, it was very thoughtful of you, can I at least buy you something from the concession stand? At least as a thank you for the sweaterâ you smile, pointing towards the food stand,
Dustin smiles, laughing a bit, âHow about I buy you something from the stand? As a thank you for coming with meâ blush creeping on his face.
âI thought you didn't have anymore moneyâ you say,
âQuarters I'm out of, but I do have five bucks cash on me, enough for two milkshakes and some slices of pizza, what do you say?â He asks, smiling a bit
You stare at him, shock and happiness on your face. He was the first person in Hawkins to buy you something, and take you somewhere for you to enjoy, not for them to enjoy.
You smile at him, a bit of blush on your face as you nod, âIâd like thatâ
âOkay great! And uh, you might want to keep the sweater on, if you didn't get your clothes stained in the arcade you definitely will eating pizza and milkshakesâ he laughs.
You laugh as well, walking close to him, you stare at him again, your heart fluttering just a bit as you watch him smile.
