As somebody who’s morals lean hard towards determinism, I’ve never understood that leading towards cruelty.
Our feelings, our experiences, are still real, no matter how they came to be or what path is before them, and, from our point of view, we can always work to bring happiness to ourselves and others.
Determinism reminds me to show love and empathy for others and to recognize reasonable actions to keep them from hurting others, not punish because we know they ‘deserve’ it. Nature or nurture, we choose neither. If there’s something beyond that, a soul, we got no more choice there. I may pass judgement on a guy in traffic, to choose to avoid people who hurt me and stop people who hurt others, but on a grand scheme, I don’t think it’s my place to claim I know if somebody ‘deserves’ pain or suffering.
And if it is set, if free will is an illusion, that has no bearing on what it is to be me. I have made choices to be a better person. I have made choices to be a happier person. If your sense of philosophy just gives you an external locus of control to deny responsibility for the pain you cause, what good is it? You know emotions are real. You’ve felt pain. You’ve felt joy. You can reasonably extrapolate others also feel these.
So yes, maybe on a grand scheme, our choices may be set, but from the ground, they feel like choices, and pretending they aren’t, that your shittiness and apathy is set, isn’t destiny. Destiny is the world you make. Make a better one. TLDR; Feeling good is nice, feeling bad is sucks. If you being joy to others or yourself, life has meaning, even if we’re all complexly wired sacks of protein.
