Yiskah had been tracking the creature through the mountains for days. She was running on no sleep, travel rations and the ale in her canteen sheâd been rationing. Even with her abilities and metabolism she was starving, dehydrated, and very near collapse. She felt like she would have had the cynocephalus long ago, if she hadnât kept getting thrown off course.Â
Due to the lack of soft soil in the rocky area, sheâd had to rely on the sense of smell and displaced rocks and plant life to track it. Well, that and the eviscerated animals and travelers and the occasional set of footprints in blood. However, there was something else out here with the odor of dark magic and mutation, something other than the creature and other than her.Â
She couldnât get a bead on what it was, particularly. She had thought the thing might have a mate, or there was something trailing it and eating its leftovers. It wasnât distinct or familiar enough to recognize, just strong enough to throw her off the proper path.Â
Yiskah paused, feeling something nearby. She closed her eyes and took a deep, steadying breath, turning on her heel and throwing one of her knives at whatever it was.
