Law was usually the last person he wanted to hear any critique from. Coby’s latest interruption to what had seemed to be usual Marine affairs had more than ruffled feathers and stirred the pot. And though he had no intention of making enemies, his moral compunction couldn’t allow him to sit still, to stand by when he so vehemently disagreed with the idea of withdrawing supplies and aid to a recently-impoverished island. So where paperwork and formal requests had failed, taking matters into his own hands hadn’t.
And he couldn’t read if Law wanted those supplies for himself, or had some other motive in mind, but regardless – the captain knew he was in trouble of some kind.
“… I can’t sit by. I don’t regret it!”
The Vice Admiral stares at the young Captain standing before him. Golden eyes are cold, calculating in a way that causes great unease in those he scrutinizes. He can get most marine officers to squirm beneath his gaze because that is his job. Being a member of Marine Intelligence and the Vice Admiral that heads most if not all internal investigations he is uniquely qualified to get the truth out of people.
In this case his task is to find out what happened to the recalled supply shipment. A task he probably didn’t need to take on himself but when he figured out the culprit he decided stepping in would be the best idea. Can’t let a promising kid with a good heart get booted because he’d acted on kindness instead of logic. That’s not to say Law doesn’t think he’s an absolute idiot because he most definitely is.
“Ah, damn it,” he groans, a tattooed hand rising to cover his face. The determination on the boy’s face is just too much. It is so genuine, so caring. It makes him feel sick and admire the boy at the same time. There is a deep breath, the Vice Admiral controlling his anger and frustration. He can’t take the supplies back now.
“That fucking bleedin’ heart of yours is gonna get you killed one day, kid,” Law says, hand lowering to settle a glare at Coby. “You’re real lucky I think the Marines need more idiots like you in the ranks.”
