@desecratedvalor gets a plotted starter! | Erik & Joan
Erik moved through the museum-like apartment with a curatorās interest in presentation. His penthouse overlooked the Metropolitan Opera. Whether heād bought it on ill-got gains or from his work as a composer and voice teacher was a mystery he preferred to remain unexplored, hidden from curious eyes. Instead, he wished his guest - for that was what he would call thisĀ āsober companionā Nadir had all but forced upon him - to see his collections from world travels, his instruments, the way his antiques blended with posh sensibilities. His was a lavish home, for his were expensive tastes. He thought of the bright poppies - only the finest - in Central Asia that had given him his first highs, his first peaceful nights, and his first taste of addiction. How dearly hisĀ āexpensive tastesā had cost him! Heād been forced to force his wine collection onto Nadir. Alcohol hadnāt been his vice of choice per se, but he wanted to make a fine first impression upon the poor soul whoād been duped into babysitting him in Nadirās stead.Ā
(And heād wanted to see Nadirās flushed fury when he discovered wine bottles tucked all around his house. His folly could have cost him more than a harmless prank; he was lucky Erik had not inflicted worse punishment upon him!)
But to the thought of first impressions, Erik devoted most of his attention today. Twice already, he had changed his outfit; thrice, his mask. What he wore now fell between formal and functional. A crisp suit paired with a stiff, black linen mask that covered his corpse-like visage. All but his eyes and lips were hidden from view. Already, he considered a mask that covered his face in itās entirety, but as he studied himself in the apartmentās only mirror, he realized that without sight of his lips, the only thing his guest would see were two, yellow eyes glowering from beneath an otherwise expressionlessĀ āfaceā. A compromise was now in place. His lips, thin and withered though they were, could be seen. He wondered if his smile would frighten or comfort a stranger. Funny - he hadnāt considered such things since his youth.Ā
The buzz of the doorbell caught his attention as he finished setting the table. Erik set down the last of the forks and he moved to answer. He drew himself to his full height, fullest confidence possible, and opened the door. What he saw surprised him - a woman stood upon his doorstep. He scanned the hallway. Surely someone else would come. She stood alone. Confident. Beautiful. Not at all what he was expecting. Was notĀ āJoanā a unisex name?
āMademoiselle, forgive me for asking, but you wouldnāt happen to be Joan Watson?āĀ
Erik wasnāt usually this aware of the musicality in his voice, but he heard it now, for fear that this was Joan Watson. He heard that too, the fear. At his side, his left hand twitched, yearning for something. If he were the praying sort, the dutiful, little Catholic his mother had wanted, he would be praying now...
Not a woman. I cannot abide the guilt of one more womanās life on my hands...
