The Elisabeth and The Abduction Myth
When I was a child I loved to watch musicals. My favorite one was The Phantom of the Opera. For me, it was the saddest story I ever heard. Then I read a novel, I always loved horror stories, but that one was different. Full of emotions, lyrics, it was amazing. I love it even now, after more than 10 years and dozens of new books and films.
A few days ago I came across another masterpiece, Viennese musical The Elisabeth. It seemed strange that I haven’t watched it earlier. During one afternoon I looked through different productions, even the Japanese one. (Thanks to my little sister, who is obsessed with everything Japanese). It is astonishing, that in spite of the differences between Western and Eastern cultures, I love the Japanese variant the most. I speak about the Toho company 3rd version, which has been produced during 2015-2016. The main reason is in little differences in a story and even in the idea of a plot.
Here we should thank the actors of principal parts, they made a brilliant job. The Death, played by Shirota Yu, seems more human, it is much more than a personification of death. Passion, lust, pain, anger are seen vividly in the eyes, gestures, even in a voice. Mari Hanabusa created an adorable Elisabeth, she made her character pretty and delicate in first scenes, then she developed a personality of the empress into a strong, sometimes selfish and cruel woman. I also noticed an actor, who played Rudolf. He is handsome, and the chemistry between him and Tha Death is rather surprising.
Regarding the plot of The Elisabeth, It’s quite obvious, that the main idea and concept are classical and maybe it doesn’t have a novelty, it is vivid and thrilling. The principal characters remind me the Greek mythology, exactly Hades and Persephone. Even their relationships seem to be alike to the Abduction myth.
Elisabeth was a pure child when she met the Death first time, she was a symbol of spring and youth like Persephone as a personification of vegetation. With time and after sufferings and losses she transformed into some chthonic character, she began to talk with dead relatives, think about death frequently. Here the other part of Persephone took place - goddess of the underworld. But unlike Persephone, The Empress submitted her fate in the end. She willingly gave her soul to the Death, fell in love with it, because it took away all the pain and misery of her long and unhappy life. (This part was doubtful, she didn’t have a choice after lethal wound, maybe she just allowed the Death to take her without any feelings towards it). For me, it’s other interpretation of the Abduction myth.
Moreover, it feels like the Abduction myth spreads its main concept of strange love throughout many fairy tales and stories. It’s a good idea to trace signs of it in the culture and literature. Maybe, Hades was a first romantic hero. (But it’s a bit inappropriate for me to name such character in the frame of romanticism, but nevertheless).
FOR VAMPIRE AND GOTHIC FANS: I will be honest, every single person being part of the vampire chronicles fandom should watch Elisabeth from the japanese troup Takarazuka (only women) It is pure Anne Rice Gothic and aesthetic style and it is pure gold, I cannot believe I was able to live without knowing this masterpiece.
