Depechen Is More Depeche Than Depeche Mode
Depeche Mode used to be one of my favorite boyfriends. For me a synthpop band using the arpeggio synth function is like electric guitar riffs for a metal head. I sincerely was acting like a swooning bride of death for Depeche Mode’s music when he first came out. However he never topped Some Great Reward in 1985. I really tried to get into his coldwave influenced Black Celebration no matter how fashionably depressed I got. I couldn’t love Depeche Mode as much.
Oh, there were some good times with Depeche Mode after 1985. Several songs were good on Music for the Masses and I thought he was returning to form on that album. His massive hits during his Violator days like Enjoy the Science were neat but when I found myself whooping it up during one of his live concerts with a bunch of sorority chicks surrounding me, who loved New Kids on the Block too, then I knew my relationship with Depeche Mode was almost over.
My boyfriend became arena synthpop to be listened to beside a crackling fireplace on a rainy day rather than being all glam and dark in a nightclub. I did adore Ultra and thought maybe I could get used to my boyfriend’s slow, moody, and sometimes seductive stuff, but I just couldn’t be with him anymore. Every song sounded like the same mid-tempo pout.
I appreciated Depeche Mode’s symphonic direction but then I found Depechen. Depechen is my new boyfriend now. He remains obscure and underground. Nobody knows about him and he is a loner and a rebel with a warm heart. Depechen is who I think Depeche Mode could have been.
Sorry Depeche Mode, I want to break up with you for good.
There’s plenty of fish in the sea and there’s even another Depeche out there by the name of Depeche Ambros, and I like that he sounds like your Music for the Masses era. So Depeche Mode, I really loved being with you from the early to mid 1980s, but the magic we had can never happen again. Depechen has been treating me well. He’s so sexy when he sings in German too. I don’t understand what he’s singing, but I’m sure it’s dark, moody, and really deep.
