It took them two more years to finally kill Voldemort. Countless Order members were murdered or just plain disappeared. But then Remus and Sirius came across something so important that it changed the course of the war. 

Horcruxes. Despicable, evil, dark magic. Only someone like Voldemort would be cruel and delusional enough to use such magics. 

Somehow, they managed, after a lot of trial and error and months of researching what they could from inside the confines of the Potter’s house, to figure out just how many that madman had made.

Sirius had nearly gone mad when Dumbledore sent news that the first one they discovered, hidden in a cave that Tom Riddle had visited when he was a boy, had held a locket of one Salazar Slytherin. Sadly, it turned out to be a fake. But even more upsetting was the discovery of the body of Sirius’s younger brother, Regulus Black. Sirius had wanted to leave the safety of James and Lily’s house and hunt down Voldemort himself for what he’d done to Regulus. Remus and James had had to restrain him until he’d calmed down enough to be reasoned with. Voldemort could not be killed, and hunting him down now would only lead to Sirius’s death, which neither of them would allow. 

It was Lily who realised that Voldemort’s Horcruxes held meanings for him. Slytherin's locket, Hufflepuff's cup, the Gaunt’s ring. 

It took Dumbledore only days to uncover Ravenclaw's diadem and destroy it. It had been hidden in the castle itself in a secret room. 

Unable to hunt down any more Horcruxes after the ring and the diadem, James had the bright idea that they might be with Voldemort's more trusted followers. It didn’t take long for them to figure out which. 

“Of course they’re all in my bloody family,” Sirius had complained. So the hunt for the locket, the cup and a potential third Horcrux. 

The best of the Order were sent in, and after more great losses, they found them. The locket, the cup and Tom Riddle's old diary. 

The final battle was small and over quickly. They didn’t waste time. What was left of the Order, Dumbledore himself, and the Department of Magical Law Enforcement’s Aurors battled Voldemort and his Death Eaters until Voldemort fell. 

They were free. Free from the fear of being hunted down and killed. Free from hiding. Free to live.
