the story of the greatest accidental symbolism i ever wrote in a fanfiction and how nobody noticed it because it was in a liam mcpoyle/dennis reynolds fic
so i wrote dennis and liam do my fair lady which has the dubious honor of being (as far as i know) the only denliam fic on ao3. but that’s not what we’re here to discuss tonight
we’re HERE TO DISCUSS this exchange that mac and liam have in the second chapter, when liam’s just moved into mac and dennis’ apartment and has been given the honor of picking the movie the three of them watch:
“Thanks,” Liam says simply. Dennis watches, more than a little surprised, as Liam deftly navigates to their (stolen) movie channels and settles on Alien.
Apparently, Dennis isn’t the only one surprised, because Mac asks incredulously, “You like Alien?”
Liam looks back at Mac and gives him a blank stare.
“What’s not to like?” he asks.
“It’s a masterwork of the sci-fi and horror genres. Plus, such bold Freudian undertones in a movie this popular and well-received?"
Liam pauses and takes in a breath that sounds almost like a hiss.
"Genius, man.”
Dennis carefully keeps his expression blank, but he has to admit, he feels just as shocked by Liam’s answer as Mac looks, his mouth hanging agape. Apparently, picking Liam apart and putting him back together will be even more interesting than Dennis thought.
Oblivious to the stir he’s caused, Liam just turns back to the TV, watching it with no sign of life in his features.
“… Predator’s better,” Mac grumbles a moment later, pouting as he shifts his gaze from Dennis and Liam to the screen.
innocuous enough right? except there is something of a storied rivalry between alien and predator. they made a couple movies about it.
this is Symbolically Significant because one of the major recurrent themes/conflicts in this fic is mac being jealous of liam, because dennis is paying more attention to liam than he is to mac. even their choice in movie reflects the tug-of-war mac and liam have going on over dennis’ attention. but, again, nobody caught this, probably because nobody read dennis and liam do my fair lady.
i saw a denliam post and immediately remembered dennis and liam do my fair lady i hope one day you'll decide to update that masterpiece! ;)

2. i do want to update that one! i’ve fallen out of love with sunny a little bit lately but out of all my sunny fics that’s the one i’d most like to update. if we’re being real i think i started writing a third chapter and then just..... forgot to finish it.................. i’d really like to update that fic some more this year!

so like... i’m not sure if it was a decision made by the writers or the actors but SOMEHOW it was decided that liam should lowkey have a thing for dennis and i just think that’s the funniest thing
