How was the Dendera Zodiac stolen from Hathor Temple, Egypt? 🤯
In the early 19th century, European explorers and scholars were racing to uncover Egypt’s ancient treasures. Among them, a French expedition arrived at the Dendera Temple, captivated by a circular ceiling carving unlike anything they had ever seen—what we now call the Dendera Zodiac.
Realizing it was an ancient astronomical chart, showing stars, constellations, and celestial cycles with incredible precision, they decided to take it to France.
The operation was far from simple. Workers spent weeks cutting the stone slab from the ceiling of Osiris’ chapel at the Hathor Temple, using saws, metal tools, and wooden supports to prevent it from cracking. However, the Dendera Zodiac was intentionally broken into two main pieces to make its removal easier and safer.
Once freed, it was transported to the Nile, shipped across the Mediterranean, and eventually presented to King Louis XVIII as a “scientific treasure.” Today, it remains in the Louvre Museum in Paris, far from the temple where it had stood for thousands of years.
The theft shocked the world, not only because of its audacity but also because of the knowledge it contained. It revealed how advanced the ancient Egyptians were in astronomy, mastering the skies long before modern science. 🌌✨
