The Cain "come find me" line (or whatever it was) is definitely an "out" for the MoC storyline.  It's a readily available, easy out.  

For 10x01, I saw Sam's SL as less to do with his demon blood drinking side (where he mostly had the well being of others in mind) and more to do with his "I hate that our dad made you into this Dean and I'm desperate to save you so I can therein save myself too" side.  Which is 100% Sam.  100%, desperate, at his wits end Sam...

You’re not a bother at all, anon,  Simply, one involves a soul and one does not. Metaphysically, the two are nothing alike.  One functions on only EMF, while the other functions on damaged EMF plus a soul.  In both cases the soul is “blocked” (or in the case of soullessness, absent) so they are similar in this regard.  For both, the ability to give a fuck is essentially gone, so the narrative can treat them as equals in many ways (which is why we got the foreshadowing mirrors in 9x17 IMO). Additionally, there’s degrees of “humanity” involved in being a demon, shades that are achieved by injecting “fixes” to the damaged EMF.  There is no equivalent to this for soullessness since there’s no damage to EMF and the soul can not be broken into pieces for a humanity “infusion”.  It’s black or white, no shades of grey.

There's as outpastthemoat calls it, the "genuine" Dean, and (what I'll call) the "adaptive" Dean (there's extensive narrative structure for this as a working term in 9x05 and 9x08 through the MOTW, but really all of the early season divine narrative).  From a lot of non-meta community peeps (folks that don't use our specific hive-speak terminology) I see them (in general) calling "adaptive Dean" simply "Dean", which is what I think you are probably reading (and tbh a lot of those peeps think "genuine Dean" doesn't exist at all sadly).  Now, from what I can gleen from things I've seen from the previews/PR and demonic construct as I understand it, demon!Dean seems to be the "adaptive" Dean x1000 IMO.  So you "normally" have "adaptive Dean" right?  "Adaptive Dean", who covers "genuine Dean" in a protective cloak of repression and self-loathing, right?  He does this to protect his heart, which doesn't believe he is worth anything and is poison.  It's all "Dean" because he uses the mask of "womanizer who doesn't need a long term relationship" to protect "genuine Dean", but... only "genuine Dean" (who we saw in season 8) is actually "Dean".
